Stop sending your children to (northern) Cyprus, Reps tell Nigerian parents

The House of Representatives has warned Nigerian parents against sending their children and wards to Universities and other higher institutions in (Turkish-occupied northern) Cyprus.

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, chairperson House Committee on Diaspora, warned Nigerians to beware of what she described as ongoing suspicious move by the authorities of Cyprus International University, Nicosia, North Cyprus, to lure students from Nigeria to their university.

The Committee said its warning was based on the fuzzy circumstances in which Gabriel Sowerei, a student of CIU,Nicosia, North Cyprus, as one Gabriel Soriwei recently died.

“Gabriel Soriwei,20 years, was a first year student of Electrical/Electronic Engineering at the Cyprus International University, Nicosia, North Cyprus.

“The university alleged he was knocked down by by a female drunk driver in July 17,2013.

“The university in connivance with the North Cyprus police, released the driver and shielded her identity from the family.

“Till date, there has not been a word of condolence to the family. His corpse was sent as an unaccompanied cargo to the grieving family, without any of his belongings.

“The Soriwei family have since buried their son and have not been reached by authorities of CIU four months after, and have expressed pain at the callousness of the university authorities.

“The committee also notes that apart from Soriwei, a Bayelsa-born musician, Stanley Oteimo, was also murdered on August 12,2013 because of a disagreement he had with a white student over a girl in Nicosia.

“The team from CIU held a seminar at Rockview hotel, Abuja on January 14,2014, to lure Nigerian students to their university and they are currently heading to Kaduna, Port harcourt, and Uyo.

“They left out Benin and Bayelsa because the late Soriwei was from Benin and Stanley was from Bayelsa State.

“From all indications, studying in this university, CIU, is not safe in particular and Nicosia, North Cyprus in General, is also dangerous for our students.

“The House Committee also notes that North Cyprus is not recognised by Nigeria and all other countries in the world except Turkey,” the House Committee concluded.

House Cttee Cautions Nigerians on Seeking Admission Into (northern) Cyprus Citadels

Following the gruesome murder of two Nigerians studying in the Cyprus International University, Nicosia, North Cyprus, at different times last year, the House Committee on
Diaspora has cautioned prospective Nigerian students not to respond to moves by the authorities of the school to persuade them to patronise the university.

Two Nigerian students, 20 year old, Gabriel Soriwei and Stanley Oteimo were individually killed by a drunk female driver and an indigenous rival, who has a quarrel over a girl friend with the latter in July and August respectively last year..

A statement by the House committee chairperson, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, drew the attention of Nigerians to the fact that the CIU authorities despite the bad way in which they and the country handled the extirpation of the students lives are now in Nigeria where they held a seminar at Rockview Hotel, Abuja on 14th January 2014, to attract Nigerian students to their university.

According to the statement, the CIU team are on their way to Kaduna, Port Harcourt, and Uyo, carefully avoiding “Benin and Bayelsa because the late Soriwei was from Benin and Stanley was from Bayelsa State."

"From all indications, studying in this university, CIU is not safe in particular and Nicosia, North Cyprus in general, is also dangerous for our students," Dabiri-Erewa noted, stressing that with the exception of Turkey, North Cyprus is not recognised by Nigeria and all other countries in the world.

What kind of 'university' behaves likes this?

Reps Warn Nigerian Students Of Studying In Cyprus International University

Nigerian students intending to study in Cyprus have been warned to be wary of moves by the authorities of Cyprus International University, Nicosia to lure them into the institution.

The House Committee on Diaspora led by Committee Chairman, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa drew attention to the dangers of sending Nigerians to the University located in North Cyprus, following the mysterious death of a student in July 2013.

In a statement, Hon. Dabiri-Erewa said the University had alleged that 20-year old Gabriel Soriwe, who hailed from Edo State was knocked down by a female drunk driver whose identity was protected by authorities.

Investigation revealed that the University connived with the North Cyprus police to release Soriwe’s killer and also shield her identity from his parents.

The university went ahead to send Soriwe’s body to his family as unaccompanied cargo without any of his belongings, and with no word of condolence from the institution.

Another Nigerian who lost his life in the region was Stanley Ateimo, who was a musician based in Cyprus and was murdered in August 2013.

The House of Representatives have warned that both the University and its location, Nicosia, are dangerous for Nigerian students, while the institution itself is not recognised by Nigeria and other countries in the world.

I have had a very interesting conversation yeasterday with a young person who used to work in the north and decided to move south. apparently people are not as friendly in the south. i had to have a lugh.

i have seen a lot of hateful posts but this takes the biscuit. as if foreign people in the south do not get murdered. The way they operate their laws in the south employers can do what ever they wish and don't even get reported. This effects thousands of workers but this was something very special. i mean this an eu country after al right?

no kilings indeed.

...just to stay on the subject; is the same kind of 'rip-off', involving Cypriot Universities? Is there an effort to lure students to Cyprus under false pretenses? Are you warning the readership of facts they should consider?

...needless to say, this horrible criminal was found, and sentenced.
