The Montevideo Convention and UN

Postby MrH » Thu Dec 12, 2013 4:39 pm

Article 1 of the Montevideo Convention states that for an entity to be a state under international law it must possess: a permanent population; a defined territory; a government; and the capacity to enter into relations with other states. Presently, Northern Cyprus meets all of these criteria. They have a permanent Turkish Cypriot population that makes up the majority of the population in Northern Cyprus, with an effective united government ruling over this territory and they furthermore have the ability to enter into relations with other states, if only the international community was receptive to them.

The Above quote is one of the reasons, besides Turkey's subtle hand, why many states are starting to work directly with the TRNC without the Greek Cypriots either knowing about it, or being formally informed. Due to the many failed UN brokered attempts to Unite the island under an impossible Federal based deal, the last being rejected by the Greek Cypriots (again!), the UN are now truly at a cross road in completely abandoning the talks process or stating that it's the "last dance". In the meantime, seeing that Turkey is still wanting a BBF formula (on the surface), I can tell you for fact that behind the scenes we are working on the contrary to such policy. The TRNC today is so well connected that if Turkey should ever turn its back on the UN talks, and freeze its EU ambitions, the TRNC would gain many - Country - friends, regardless of the UN's formal position on the matter. Where, this bring me to why we are still locked in a UN process - because Turkey is waiting for the Formal outcome, and the Greek Cypriots are being fooled in accepting this scenario because of their own selfish politics, which will eventually fail them due to their lack of boldness in Forcing Unification or Kicking Turkey out!

I think you find that the above article also assumes that the territory defined has not been invaded and illegally occupied. Whichever way you cut it, that is the de facto situation. The northern part of Cyprus is officially under illegal occupation as thus the above article is null and void.

Now, if you have other inside information as to Turkeys real intentions that is something else and this should be proof enough that it is the Turkish side that has prohibited any resolution and people like VP, Lordo and others should STFU when they start to blame the GC side.

You have either just shot yourself in the foot or are just plain stupid and your clever clot comments have back fired on you :)

Mr H,

You’re a very lucky man because I had just destroyed all 4 points you made with credible evidence and just as I was going to post it my browser crashed and refreshed!

Anyway, the Montevideo Convention criteria, has been covered on the forum many times but I have no faith in the forum’s stupid search engine!

Get Real,
I know mate, but there are many others (new to the Cyprus situation) who don't know anything. And, the situation of Cyprus does change on a monthly basis now!

B25
Your "illegal Occupation" chanting and etc is getting boring and means Nothing in the Practical running of the island and its two states, and you know it. What do you have to say about Israel and Palestine, or how much the former Yugoslavian Federated states have changed since their conflict; what was Taboo and unacceptable to what it has now become. The only thing you are achieving by chanting such rubbish is proving how the two Cypriot peoples are unable to compromise as you clearly know how much we Turkish Cypriots love our Turkishness, and what would have happened in 1974 if Turkey had not have intervened! Stop skirting around my questions with the same old GC statements.....as BRITAIN never does, nor DOES the UN.....if you want to say something valid, show us where Britain and the UN formally use such terms against the TRNC. Go on, show us all....we British are watching this space....Mr "illegally occupied" man. Britain and the UN would never dare.

Get Real,

Opps, almost forgot, it also does depend on the Context of what the Greek Cypriots believe against how the other world states working with the TRNC actually perform themselves. Visit EMU and we'll show you some shocking examples of how close we are with other countries, particularly our Civic Societies and Government sponsors.

So, you think it's ok for you Greek Cypriots to ethnically cleanse the British from 1955 to 1959, and then the defenseless Turkish Cypriot villagers from 1963-1974? NUFF SAID....Read the British TIMES NEWSPAPER articles of that time, as that's what I have been shoving in the faces of the UN for over 40 years - and that's why they can not kick Turkey out of Cyprus.
