identify wildflowers

Postby londoner » Wed Nov 27, 2013 7:42 am

I am sure somebody knows the answer. What are the wildflower plants which are now starting to emerge which look like daffodil and tulip leaves.

The daffodil one I am told grows from tubers and produces a tall flowering stalk in the summer and it's carrot like tubers were used medicinally in the past for treating cuts.

The tulip like plant grows from bulbs and also produces a tall flowering stalk in the summer and was used medicinally by slicing to treat aches and pains.

Both plants I am told are protected species.

Anybody know there names?

No they do not look like orchids. Asking around I have been told their names in Greek are something like - tulip leaf looking one is afrovis shilo and the daffodil leaf looking one is something like spondilio. Hope this helps identify them and would be grateful if somebody knows the English or Latin names of these plants.

Hmm, try going onto Google Images and search "Cyprus Flora" - an abundance of plants pop up. You might be able to identify your unknowns from the photographs.

If anybody is interested: asphodeloi is asphodelus aestivus and avroshilloua is known as sea squill or drimia maritima.
