The Joint Statement

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

The last statistic I took note of from up there was 65,000 TCs and 107,000 Turks.
If he's complaining at that, he will be leaving if he gets his wish of more!

He's saying he supports a joint statement, which is very nice but he isn't saying he wants this phrase in the statement...

"single sovereignty, single citizenship and single international personality"

True. But Eroglu is asking for talks without a joint statement. Whereas Anastasiades has effectively made it a precondition. Interestingly, the Cyprus President is asking for a joint statement to include UN resolutions, High-Level agreements and the EU acquis.

Eroglu is being given an ultimatum in other words. And has decided to throw his toys out of the pram in response.

It's a good excuse for the EU to get rid of Turkey... once and for all, wankers.

Anastasiades is correct to demand a joint statement. Otherwise there can be no negotiations.

The days where Turkey can keep changing the goalposts are over.

It is actually a very clever ploy. It is the Turks that refuse to agree on a joint statement, so surely the blame for the collapse must lie with them.

Yes and some encouraging news from London earlier this week when both types of CYs met (under the United Cyprus Platform) with MPs and Lords of the GB Parliament and they were quite happy to issue a joint statement...

From their press release...

"... In our meeting in London we reiterated our founding goal that we shall be co- operating on reaching a solution in Cyprus based on a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation with political equality as set out in the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. We have been working very hard and doing projects on confidence building measures, rapprochement of the two communities and creating a culture of peace since then. We believe that a bi-communal and bi-zonal Federal Cyprus is the only viable solution. We also believe that previous agreements reached in relation to a Federal Cyprus having a single sovereignty, single international personality and single citizenship should still be valid..."

Even theCyprus Mail thinks that Anastasiades is right:-
"PRESIDENT Anastasiades made a valid point at Monday evening’s meeting with Dervis Eroglu when he said that “instead of trying to discuss terms of re-unification, we cannot be discussing the terms of a future divorce.” By persisting with his ‘two sovereign states’ theory, Eroglu, in effect, wants to keep an escape route open which he or one of his successors could take when they chose to do so."

Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots need to be told in no uncertain terms that the "trnc" will never be recognised no matter how much they "change things on the ground"

We will probably have to wait until the Turkish economy goes tits up before an international leader has the balls to tell Turkey to get off its high horse and loosen its grip on Cyprus.
