http://famagusta-gazette.com/glafcos-cl ... 353-69.htm

"...Born in 1919, Glafcos Clerides was the elder son of John Clerides, Q.C., the lawyer who unsuccessfully opposed Archbishop Makarios for election to the Presidency of the Republic in 1959 and was regarded as the island's elder statesman and a valued adviser to many successive Governors.

Glafcos Clerides completed his studies at the Pancyprian Gymnasium and then went to study in England.

During World War Two, Clerides joined the Royal Air Force. In 1942, his plane was shot down after being caught in a barrage of very accurate flak, but despite being injured the young airman managed to bailout over Germany…."

His generation of Cypriots saw so much war, gain and loss, but mostly changes for Cyprus. It's so sad that they leave us with Cyprus still in tatters, gone before we have extricated Turkey's occupation force, but left with the hope that his hand has helped bring Cyprus closer to freedom

Condolences to his family and may he rest in peace. :(

RIP Glafcos Clerides, probably the most statesmanlike Cypriot politician ever. Had there been a few more Cypriot politicians on both sides like him the island would not be in its current mess.

I can't disagree with any of that.

Sorry, can't agree with his support of the Annan Plan. A consequence no doubt of his, by then, extreme old age and resignation to our "meekness" against the "mighty power" of Turkey. A condition which he nevertheless quickly rectified for us by his moves to see us into the EU. Good and bad, like most politicians.

But much loved as a Cypriot of my dad's generation.

He was the best politician and President Cyprus has ever had. A Statesman for sure.

The fact he supported the renegotiation of the Annan Plan (which Tassos refused to do) is saying something. He is a politician that always looked at Cypriot interests first.

 A Churchill gimmick doesn’t equate to a statesman.
