Come off it mate! He always put the RoC's interests first throughout his life dominated by public service and even served the RAF in WW2 and escaped from a NAZI POW camp.

The guy was absolutely awesome. You should be very proud of his contributions to Cyprus.

A HELL OF A LOT more shrewd than anyone else that has held the highest office!

The guy mixed well with international leaders which is what I would expect of all RoC Presidents but none achieved good results like Clerides did.

Anyway, you think he was bad for Cyprus, I think he was good. Let's leave it there!

One of his most important achievements was getting Cyprus into the EU (not to be confused with entry into the Euro). This was a significant tactical achievement in the face of opposition from Turkey, Britain and from AKEL.

Only time will tell if he was right about the AP. Perhaps, like the Zurich Agreement, he saw it as better than the status quo and once inside the EU something better could be achieved. I don’t think Turkey’s accession was ever linked to GC acceptance of the AP, one has to wonder what effect an attempted veto on Turkey’s accession by a post Annan Plan government of Cyprus would have had on GC/TC relations, would it have involved 1963/64 tensions again. The EU would have been heavily involved in sorting out the mess of its member State.

Unlike most Cypriot politicians he realised that Cyprus was not the centre of the universe and that the powers that would, unfortunately, determine Cyprus’s future would always listen to prostitute nations with bigger guns. Having said that it looks like the “madame” of the whorehouse could be in for a sticky time.
