Gender gap in Cyprus

Postby Talisker » Sun Oct 27, 2013 1:05 am

According to the World Economic Forum the 2013 Global Gender Gap Index places Cyprus at 79th in the list of 136 nations. The Index examines the gap between men and women in four fundamental categories (subindexes): Economic Participation and Opportunity (Cyprus 85th), Educational Attainment (83rd), Health and Survival (91st) and Political Empowerment (76th). The Nordic countries score best for equality between genders, and for comparison the UK is 18th overall, the US 23rd, Greece 81st, and Turkey 120th.

If, and of course it could be a big if, the survey reflects the true position of Cyprus, where women are disadvantaged compared with men to such an extent, is this acceptable? How can the gap be reduced and would it be considered 'a good thing' in Cyprus for this to happen?

I haven't got time to read the whole thing, busy with housework etc., but a fundamental flaw lies in the fact each country seems to be internally scrutinized. For example, literacy levels might be lower in Cypriot women compared to Cypriot men, but they are higher than literacy levels of even men in, say .... England.

As for a "gender gap", well if we look at the extremes of Yemen and (tiny) Iceland then we might find that the middle-scoring countries, like Greece and Cyprus, actually have the gender balance just right - a gender balance that allows for a happier household, perhaps.

So, closing the "gender gap" should be done by raising expectations for both men and women, not by lowering those for men.

Being an Australian Greek Cypriot, hence a super politically incorrect person and an alleged misogynist, I would just like to say that there should be more rough kinky sex in between discussions of this nature in the bedroom so that we can keep that crazy woman a little more quiet!

(just kidding obviously except for keeping that crazy woman quiet!) :P
