Sweet award for Cypriot honey

TZIVERTI honey from Cyprus was named the best honey in the world at the World Beekeeping Awards 2013 in Kiev, Ukraine.

The honey, produced by Honeymell Z.P. Ltd in Larnaca, entered two of the six categories at the event and won first place for both. It then went on to be crowned the best honey in the world.

A total of 112 honey samples were entered from 25 countries. One hundred medals were distributed, including 41 gold, 31 silver and 28 bronze.

Tziverti honey has been awarded in European and international competitions in the past.

Honeymell Z.P.Ltd owns 1,600 bee hives and is active in the production and bottling of Cypriot honey under the brand name Tziverti. The company also imports and bottles honey under the brand name Melissanthi.

Lemmings say we're too small to be producing the best honey in the world.
Must be a mistake.

Actually I tried non-Cypriot honey when I used to live abroad.

My outcome was that Cypriot honey is definitely better than American or European honey. Dunno about Asian or African honey though.

Congratulations to the Pancyprian Beekeepers Association for a great comeback after being unfairly hammered some years ago. :D

- Now, let's look after those busy bees that make our lovely honey. Stop using insecticides !

Made some Mead a few years ago and very nice stuff it was too. Still got a bottle or two somewhere.

Congratulations Cyprus!

There is a lot more to Honey that meets the eye of course.

I am the most super fussiest eater you guys are ever likely to meet. Very pedantic about things such as Meat, Seafood, Vegetables, Fresh Fruit and of course Honey.

I only buy organic honey from a beekeeper on a small island called Kangaroo Island. 100% organic, no blends just pure honey in 4 flavours such as the mild Mallee and the hard Stringy Bark varieties. It is the best Honey I have ever tasted in my life.

The island has the only genetically pure Ligurian Bee (Apis mellifera ligustica) due to its isolation.

I wonder if these guys sent in a sample. Would love to see how they stack up.

This is my supplier, straight from the beekeeper himself.

Like I said, I am the fussiest of eater.

I am probably the only Cypriot that rejects Cypriot Souvlas because I find most Cypriots absolutely overcook and burn their meat. If my meat is not bleeding red juices, then it is simply not good enough for Paphitis! I have gone completely vegetarian at many Cypriot Souvlas and "Barbies"! So consider yourselves warned when inviting me for dinner!

My dad was a Master Chef and so I got spoilt.

If you think you can meet the Paphitis tick of approval (I doubt it) then go ahead and kindly request my presence by sending me a PM. :)

Deffo agree with the overdone souvla bit. Keep telling CYs at souvles that the meat is nicely done, nice and juicy... but they persist in cooking it 'til it's bone dry.

This is about honey, not souvla!

Anyway, it's rather disconcerting that this honey winner is a big company (ltd). Maybe they buy from lots of producers and then blend. Perhaps that's the only way to secure a win. Cannot imagine some of the old folk we've bought honey from managing to get enough together for a competition - which adds to the mystery and exclusivity of small producers. My auntie who lived next to the church, on a hillside, used to keep bees and I remember helping her smoke the bees out to collect the honey. My first experience of a bee sting. :)
The best honey still has to retain a little smokiness and I find that the mass produced ones do not - haven't tried this winning honey to see how authentic it tastes but I have two Cypriot honeys on the go at the moment, Orange and Blossom (hmm) - bought from a supermarket and they have no smokiness. Greece still manages to produce the most rich and intense treacly honey. But again, it's lots of individuals making their own, which is charming but may not receive any accolades.
