"... A high-ranking American official has said that the approach to the solution of the Cyprus problem must be different from that of the Annan plan, but that some elements of the plan must be retained.
Erik Rubin, an assistant Secretary of State in charge of the Cyprus problem, told the 29th Annual Cyprus and Hellenic Leadership Conference in Washingtonin that a plan which has been rejected by the voters cannot be the future of the country.
He added that a document the size of a telephone directory is neither practical nor suitable to govern a country.
Rubin also said that a solution of the problem will demand tough decisions by Turkey and all sides involved.
He said that the time for a serious commitment has come and this may be the pay-off time.
Rubin also said the return of the occupied city of Famagusta to its lawful inhabitants must be one of the early subjects to be discussed when negotiations on the Cyprus issue restart later this year.
He added he hoped there will be a real commitment by the Turkish leaders in their intentions to return Famagusta..."
