During the fall of Cyprus to the Ottomans in 1570, the sacrifice of Maria Sygklitiki is legendary.
Coming from the noble Nicosia family of the Sygklitikians, Maria Siglitiki was included among the most beautiful young women of the island who "were selected" in order to be sent to the Sultan for his sexual pleasures. When the captives were led to the Turkish ship which was to transport them to Constantinole, Maria Sygklitiki decided not to accept the humiliation. She managed to approach the gunpowder room of the ship and put it on fire blowing it in the air. The ship had still not sailed but was anchored at the gulf of Famagusta. Two more ships that were anchored next to it also caught fire and blew up. They were loaded with captives. They burned and were destroyed also. The date was the 6th of October 1570……
