Dial up account

Postby Alan Darvill » Fri Nov 18, 2005 3:09 pm

Can you tell me, I am at present living in Wales, but emigrating to Cyprus as soon as I sell my house here.

But there is a problem. I know that I cannot get broadband thoughout Cyprus, only in the cities, but as I don't get broadband where I live in Wales anyway, that's no problem, but here in Britain, there is a dial-up account that gets me free internet/web between the hours of, I thjnk, 6.30 pm and 8.00am. The times may be a bit wrong, but near enough. This is from my dial-up account, and so I do not even have to pay for the phone connection between these times.

Is there anything in Cyprus that is the same, or similar?

Actually, and it's now just on NTL, if I use NTL every time for normal phone calls - obviously not mobile, but landline, and I use £15 or more a month, which is easy there, I get ALL my e-mail and web dial-up accound for free anyway.

Hi Alan

Sorry but no; internet access which used to be cheap here, has got a lot more expensive. We need more competition.

Actually the reason it got more expensive is competition. Cyta used to subsidize dial-up by charging more in other things (e.g. international phone calls).

Now with the competition they can not do that anymore.

The solution is the expansion of DSL and Cyta should be pressed in that direction.

Hi Piratis

CYTA were forced to change charging policies as cross-subsidisation of telecommunication services is illegal under EU law. If CYTA had to compete with other network suppliers, they would become more effeciient and reduce prices to maintain market share.

Which leads us back to the the original post. Even if you live in the suburbs , try to get dsl. You can op for the "cytanet for all" which is a bit expensive dial-up option, but you dont need to open account.

There is a new service called cablenet.com.cy, which delivers cable tv and internet services through your main socket. Give that a shot as well

If you have dls in your area get it. Wicked, cablenet started offering internet also now? Even if they do the area they cover is much less than adsl though.

Cablenet are in financial ruin. They don't have a team in Larnaca any more because they are still owed 3 months wages, so they alll left to be able to survive, Limassol has a team of 2 who are only hanging around to get their wages. They don't run on Fibre Optic but RG11 cable which can cause alot of signal problems (no signal range).

They have yes, I have a friend who is running 1mb/128kb, and he is happy most of the days of the week. I am guessing that becouse of the technology used for this service maybe it will spread out faster.

Cities and outskirts have ADSL broadband. But if you live in a small village then only dial-up is available. I do not live in the city but ADSL is available here fortunately !! :D Now there is also 3G wireless broadband.
