University of Cyprus establishes medical school.

Postby Cap » Sat Aug 31, 2013 4:00 pm

Great news indeed and hopefully within a couple of years will be among the top 200 universities in world.

'THE UNIVERSITY of Cyprus yesterday welcomed the first students to its newly established Medical School.

A vision stretching out over many years had finally become a reality, rector Constantinos Christofides said.

Speaking at a welcome event for the 37 medical students, Christofides said that on October 3 in the presence of President Nicos Anastasiades some major announcements would be made about the medical school, which “will bring it into a new era”.

Christofides said the ambition of the University of Cyprus, which next year celebrates 25 years, is before 2020 to be among the 200 best universities in the world.

“With the establishment of the medical school this will be achieved even faster because our country deserves to have a university among the 200 best in the world,” he said.

He praised the University for its good infrastructure, human and logistical resources and said that at the beginning of 2015 a new library would be opened.

“You are coming to a good school with good potential. The University is a national institution, which despite the financial circumstances is going very well,” the rector said.

In their address dean of the medical school, Andreas Adam and assistant dean Zacharias Zachariou, also welcomed the students and expressed confidence that they would do it justice so that Cyprus could be proud of its the first doctors that would graduate in their own country.

Adam said the medical school would improve the care of patients in Cyprus, would elevate the level of postgraduate medical education and would bring great economic benefits to the island.

Medical Director of Nicosia general hospital Evagoras Nicholaides urged students to study hard, saying that learning never ends and that medicine was constantly changing and progressing.'

Like busses, three arrive at once. the European University is opening a medical school; they hoped to do so in 2011/12, while the University of Nicosia is operating a medical school in conjunction with St George's University of England. Good luck to all three facilities.

Where is the best place to study to become a doctor in Cyprus?

Does anyone here know how these institutions are in comparison to other universities in Europe?

If Cypriot doctors are anything to go by I’d say they rank as high as those in Bangladesh.

I have a story to tell regarding this. I'll keep t short. A friend of mine living in Cyprus was diagnosed with cancer so he flew to Turkey for a second opinion and the specialist doctor confirmed this. My friend asked the Dr what is next. The Dr told him to get back to Cyprus and reserve his plot at the cemetery.

He came back and wanting to exhaust all his lifelines he visited a GC Dr. This Dr also conformed his cancer but told my friend he will treat him to the best of his ability and hope for the best. That was 15 years ago. My friend has a decent quality of life and has only the best to say about his Dr. May he continue with good health and may god bless his doctor.

Maybe they’re better than their counterparts on the other side of the roadblock, but that doesn’t make them good on the international scale.

Overall I’m quite disappointed with the medicare that is available here in the RoC, and my wife and I rather concerned have started having chats about our options as we gradually get older and move into another phase of life where medicare takes on a more prominent role.

I know lots of people who are coming and going to private doctors and the hospitals here including ourselves, but are any of them actually getting cured? It seems to me like a never-ending string of visits that lead to nothing!

Milti, often expresses his appreciation of the care he receives in medical places he’s stayed at on the island... but the nurses and hospital beds and the food and all that is not what I’m complaining about... it’s just that we don’t have true scientists here in Cyprus; you know those studious, nerdy, meticulous, brains that take it very personal when they can’t find the cure and only use that as a measure of their success etc.

All we’ve got here is a bunch of schmucks who’ll keep prescribing everything they can think of until they get it right, if ever… and that to me is NOT science!
