I disagree that racism means hatred towards those who are different, although it can lead to it.

Racism is to categorize human beings to superior and inferior based on their racial descent and to mistreat or hate the latter because of their “inferiority”.

On the other hand, NOT LIKING the religious beliefs or the national ethics and/or customs and practices or even the culture of some people, and not wanting their beliefs and practices and culture to prevail in my country and over my nation is not racism, as long as this “dislike” does not turn into hate or discrimination and/or abuse.

Is xenophobia racism? Only if it derives from racism, i.e., from the conviction that the xenos or the xenoi is/are inferior and consequently of evil or bad nature and therefore one should fear them JUST FOR WHAT THEY ARE, or to be afraid of the evil that the xenophobe is certain that they will bring or do. Not when this phobia is justified, deriving from repeated harmful acts and doings or intentions of the xenos/noi towards me or my own nation, my own convictions, my safety etc.

I am not xenophobic but I dread the moment I may need to walk at night in one of the Athenian neighborhoods which are occupied and frequented by hundreds of hungry, angry, impoverished and religiously or ethnically fanatic xenoi from all parts of Asia and Africa and some from the Balkans, who I KNOW hate my guts just because I am who I am and I have what I have.

I certainly consider myself to be neither 'Racist' nor 'Anti Semitic' although my opinion of the 'Israeli' attitude toward it's neighbours is quite often at odds with the general consensus of opinion , particularly when the 'Middle East' situation is under discussion.

'Racism' (in my opinion) has become a handy political tool nowadays, it encourages people to rise up in conflict and supresses the ability to make balanced judgements when 'Governments' embark upon campaigns which actually are a disgrace to self respect.

Look no further than the recent 'Gassing' of innocent children in Syria for a SMALL example, bearing in mind that it doesn't matter WHICH side of the conflict may be responsible, the overall picture IS, war is declared upon the children of one nation at the whim of 'The Children' of another BUT, it takes a little thinking about.
