Believe it or not, I wouldn’t blame so easily the retired British individuals who, having spent the biggest part of their lives in the cold and the dark of Britain are tempted to purchase cheap property on a sunny island to spend there the rest of their lives in peace. Besides, why should THEY care if the north of Cyprus is under illegal occupation when the UN and the EU are NOT doing anything about it? And when they hear and learn that even Mrs. Blair is defending their “right” to do so?

I believe that the first to be blamed is the British government for not warning it’s citizens strongly against them going to buy stolen property located on illegally occupied territory.

The second to be eually or even stronger blamed, is the R.o.C. for not staging a long term, continuous and systematic campaign all over the world aiming on the one hand, to press governments to deter their citizens from the above and on the other to “scare off” both investors from getting into real estate investments in the “trnc” and buyers from buying, by pointing out the illegality of their activities the risks involved and the possible legal and other consequences which they might be facing under the laws of the RoC.

And another thing. I believe that Cyprus AND Greece should have long ago passed laws according to which any person having on his/her passport an entry stamp of the “trnc” should be characterized as “persona non grata” for Greece and Cyprus and be denied entry to both. Additionally, Greece and Cyprus should have pressed for such a legislative regulation to be adopted by all EU member states and all European Council member states.

Kimon

I am under the impression that the "TRNC" does not stamp passports but you have to fill out a separate piece of paper instead. (maybe I am wrong)

Some people are just plain ignorant and stupid, I understand that and that ignorance and stupidity is infinite but I tend to believe that these people ( it doesn't matter what nationality they are) know that they have purchasing illegal property in an unrecognized occupied zone and that the property belongs to displaced and evicted refugees that want to return but cant because of the Turkish army.

What if they did not know before? what do they do then once they learn that this is in fact the case? They deny recognizing this fact and choose to side with the TC's and the propaganda of the illegal regime. They regurgitate it back to the GC's to justify their illegality and outright stupid decision in their own mind. They have a vested interested to take this position and they become an accessory to the problem.

I find it very audacious that a "carpetsquatter" expects legal redress for committing and/or being an accessory to a crime. If anything, this elevates the stupidity to even greater heights and its just absurd. They should be prosecuted when they come forward and make themselves known.

Idiots, absolute idiots.

Do they indeed when they purchase it? How could they if they are SO ignorant and stupid that many of them don't even know that Cyprus is NOT part of Greece when they book their holidays?

I am not saying that all of the are innocent or missinformed but what have the governments of Britain, Cyprus and Grece done all these decades to help these idiots and ignorants realise what they will be getting into to before they did?

I fully agree. ONCE they learn they do just that. But what if, when they learn is already too late because they have already paid their money? What would YOU and ME have done if we had been in their shoes? Would we simply accept that we had lost our life's savings and that was that?

....They should be prosecuted when they come forward and make themselves known.

Yes they should if it is proved that they knew the true situation and/or they had received proper warning but they went ahead regardles. But at the same time, those proving to have been good faithed, should be suing Turkey and the vendors of the properties for defrauding them and the British and the CY governments for not informing, warning and protecting them.

The UK officially warn of purchasing property in Cyprus on one of their pages, be it North or South.

https://www.gov.uk/how-to-property-in-cyprus

Its not hard to find if you wish to know all avenues when buying property......if of course you are of savvy nature.
They also do acknowledge disputes in parliament, and documents can be downloaded

http://www.parliament.uk/briefing-papers/SN06578

As for passport. Having been through the Lidra Street crossing, its a farce. They look at your official passport, issue a piece of paper with the TRNC heading, stamp it, and hand it you back with your passport. They DO NOT, and ARE NOT allowed to stamp anywhere in your own passport. You must not lose that piece of paper on your trip in the North. On the return, they do exactly the same process in reverse.

In common with most 'Bargain' purchases (or business transactions) when blinded by greed, "What's cheap IS cheap".
