Would the USA bargain with someone occupying half of Florida? Would it give the occupier "marks" and second chances to do better in some obscure tests?

The Turks are laughing at us. Isn't that what VP has told us all along? I for one do not support any more aid to Turkey or further inclusion in EU affairs. I also think the negotiations should stop completely and an ultimatum should be given to Turkey to withdraw from Cyprus. Then the EU has to prove itself by carrying out the threat, e.g. economic sanctions etc

I agree but unfortunately there is not much chance of this happening.

The EU can't be trusted and I don't think they care all that much about Cyprus or the occupation.

The best thing going for us at the moment is the improvement in our ties with Israel, oil and gas, and the licenses granted to US and Israel. As a result, our ties with the US will improve. I believe we have more chance of the US going hard on Turkey to withdraw from Cyprus. They won't issue an ultimatum or impose economic sanctions, but they can apply as lot more pressure, and even block many arms deals in Congress.

If Turkey starts getting heavy instead of blowing lots of gas of its own. then things could get more interesting.

Cheer up please. It's not all bad. You sound kind of depressed or cynical. Hope you are well anyway...

ERDOGAN LOOKS WEST

Although Gul is a devout Muslim, he has been exhorting Turks and the government to remain fully on course in terms of the institutional Westernization of Turkey that has been ongoing since the beginning of the 19th century. The principle current instrument for him in this regard is Turkey’s European Union perspective, which he reiterated this week during his official Eid al-Fitr message to the public, in which he also referred to the Gezi Park protests.

“It should not be forgotten that legitimate democratic reactions reflecting social expectations and objections, and which are expressed in a manner that does not disrupt the peace, are indispensible aspects of our democracy,” Gul said.
“It is vital that everyone sees this and remains focused on our promising tomorrows. We have to concentrate on large targets, such as EU membership and a new constitution, which will carry Turkey above the level of contemporary civilization,” he added, urging national solidarity...

Given Ankara’s misadventures in the Middle East, Erdogan has no choice left but to turn Turkey’s ship westward if he is to fulfill his vision of a grand Turkey based on advanced democracy. The basic parameters for this kind of democracy lie in the West, and not eastward.

This is the telling part, I think Gul is looking to be a moderate voice inside the AKP so that he is in position to take should Erdogan fall.

Turkey should never have been allowed to start talks while the illegal occupation continued. Turkey should be told the process stops now unless and until the Roc is recognised as the legit government and withdraws its troops, allowing the disposed back to their homes, and signs up to UNCLOS, in the process agreeing to actual extents of the EEZ, etc, of EU states.

I consider that the EU should adopt a reciprocity system, so if any non EU state suffers any particular discrimination compared to other EU states at the hands of a non EU state then the measures applied to that Eu state are applied to the non EU state in by the whole EU, eg Bans on overflight of EU airspace, bans on ship calling at EU ports, etc.

As for giving money and preferential trade treatment?

I would support trade sanctions. I can live without Turkish delight..The trouble is that EU is to busy sucking-off big buisiness eg the car markers, who are exporting jobs to Turkey rather than keeping them in the EU. It is not even protecting its own citizens against the completion of cheap non EU labour that eg Turkey provides.
