Royal Fever!

Here is an interesting doco and insight into the former Greek Royal Family.

Question is, since he is obviously a very nice and sincere person, and quite old school, why was he betrayed?

Probably the MOST Greek and Hellenic of all Hellenes, this King of the Hellenes!

Despite your pretence it’s pretty obvious you have a fascination with Greeks because I’ve noticed from all people you start the most threads about them!

It’s most unfortunate that you can be so pathetic Paphitis…

The last Greek King was Constantine XI Palaiologos

I understand that when John VIII Palaiologos died that his two brothers, Demetrios and Constantine, contested the throne. Ultimately at the behest of Dowager Empress Helena, the Ottoman Sultan Murat arbitrated the dispute and awarded the throne to Constantine.Constantine was only any sort of a king because of the Turks. By that time Byzantine Empire had all but collapsed: indeed by the late 14t century the Byzantine Empire was probably a vassal state to the Ottomans. Some small parts remained in the Peloponnese, and Constantinople had been reduced from a city of 500,000 to 50,000. The rest was largely under Venetian, Florentine and/or Ottoman control. (Athens for example was part a Florentine Duchy but was essentially an Ottoman vassal state.)

What is extremely interesting is that Greece could have probably done with this guy rather than tolerate all the incompetent nincompoops like Karamanlis Snr, Papandreou Snr, Simitis, Mitsotakis, Papandreou Jnr, Karamanlis, and Samaras. Look at what these idiots have done, and look how they have not done one single thing of any note for Cyprus.

The guy should be a National Hero! He should be a National Hero because he has the right values to help the country, and because he tried to destroy the Coup by organizing a counter Coup against the Junta with military units from the Navy and Air Force that were loyal to him and opposed the Junta. Instead, they take his property and revoke citizenship. I think this is what he wants most of all. The citizenship of his country. He say's he and his family are Greek and he continues to work for Greece today as he has set up a Disaster Relief Foundation under his wife's name.

Really sad that the Greek People betrayed this man but as he said, they do have the political right to choose. They seemed to think that he supported the Coup because he swore them into office. I believe that he was buying time in order to recruit some support amongst Military and Police units. I also believe him when he said that he did it to avoid unnecessary bloodshed and possible civil war.

I quite find this former King of the Hellenes, very Greek, and very noble. Bit of a shame that everything he has done for Greece is not recognized as it should be.

This guy is bloody excellent. Any country would be very proud to have him as a citizen, perhaps Monarch.

For the sake of remaining on topic!

Interesting ....erm .... symptoms.

I think Queen Elizabeth and Constantine are separate issues and I am far from a Royalist myself. They are inter related, as are all other European Monarchs.

I looked into the Greek Royals after admittedly not knowing enough about the history and why they were deposed. Found some interesting videos which gave me a nice insight.

Bottom line is that I came to conclusion that Constantine has good values from the old school which are sadly becoming more rare in this day and age. Despite all the things that have happened, he really loves Greece, feels Greek and works for Greece for little recognition. I find that quite sad.

He also attempted a Counter Coup with Military Units from the Navy and Air Force which sadly failed. He had to flee into exile because his safety and the safety of his family would no doubt be marginalized. Very honorable actions to restore some Constitutional Order and help the Greek People free themselves from the fascist terror. No doubt, if he was successful, things may have been different for Cyprus.

I also ponder what might be if the Monarch in Greece was retained. Would Greece be better off? Well, in my opinion, things can't get any worse than today.

I will remove these 2 posts into the correct thread so that we can remain on topic! :D

One thing I’ve realized from this forum over the years:

If you’re not living in Cyprus and not working in Cyprus, and not serving the National Guard, and can’t even read/write Cypriot, you’re as Cypriot as Turkish basadembo!
