New member looking for info for moving to cyprus as a teache

Postby julieaddison » Thu Jul 18, 2013 7:44 pm

Hi,
I am a science teacher, live in Dubai at present but would love to relocate to Cyprus. I am looking for sept 2014 but could maybe do sooner. I have looked at some school websites but still cant get info on average salary, terms and conditions, accomodation etc. We have no kids with us so only need small apartment, no crazy life style hopes but would like to be able to get reasonable car, have internet, be able to eat out a couple of times a week. Grateful for any advice. Please feel free to email me [email protected]
:)

Teaching jobs in Cyprus are generally not well paid in the private sector, which is probably where you will work as there is no chance of a job in the state sector. The wages could start as low as euro 1700 per month. Many jobs are filled with Cypriots waiting for a state sector teaching jobs.
For the state sector Apart from needing To be Cypriot and speak Greek there is a massive queue of graduates all after teaching jobs, on a buggins' turn next basis. They are very well paid. In some subjects the waiting time is potentially over 10 years.

I doubt any school has accommodation so you are looking at renting. You will be able to get internet and at the moment it is a buyers market for cars. Just depends what you call reasonable. There are plenty of websites showing car prices. They can however be relatively high compared to eg UK.

I know some private schools are supposedly struggling and staff have been laid off. In one school, American Academy Limassol and Pafos, (not AA Larnaca, different firm) I am told they had not been paid their proper wage for months.

Best bet is probably to get the CV in and then ask the questions but be prepared to be disappointed both as to availability of jobs and the wage.

Not essential in many of the private schools, particularly those teaching English Curriculum.

I don't think I want local school and have read some stories about schools laying teachers off. I will send my cv off to the schools, someone sent me a list. I will also come over and check out areas. We only need a 2 bed apartment at best , only 2 of us. My partner is a trained mechanic so maybe he could get something? 1700 a month would be fine for us to live on, we do have savings from dubai. Checked some car prices and they are very expensive, again we do have money to buy a second hand car to get to work and back, and I have to realise petrol prices I have been paying in dubai are nothing like Cyprus.

I don't speak Greek but the international schools say they teach in English. Would this be a problem.

Thanks for your help. Julie

Forget it! We have severe unemployment and financial issues here and do not encourage anyone to come here so please look elsewhere.

Yup, public sector teaching jobs are high in demand.
It's not that they love teaching, they wait like a pack of rabid dogs for connections to pull strings within the political parties they're affiliated to in order to get teaching positions.
Most don't give a damn if the kids learn, nor do they care about refining teaching methods and bettering the youth. It's all about a fat paycheck, doing as little as possible and job security.

Like a few have intimated; you need to have something to OFFER - above and beyond the existing. Most teachers in Cyprus speak at least two languages. You are already at a disadvantage.
