Not essential in many of the private schools, particularly those teaching English Curriculum.

Yes but it is considered an advantage to speak both languages. Imagine myself to tach in Engand with no English language . Can I teach in england If I dont speak English what are my chances ? Of cousre I hope she find what she is looking for !

My wife got jobs teaching in two English language / curriculum schools with no Greek and with English as a second language. I know of other teachers with no Greek in the private sector.

Maybe the place is working is managed by not Cypriots ie British school. And She is lucky If she found a job without speaking the language . A Cypriot applying for a job in England will have less than zero chance to get a job in England If she does not speak English even If he is more qualified that the English. And even If he is speaking little English. What is fair for them is what is their interest and nothing else I speak from experience . We live at a time where what is Fair is different to different countries based on their own interest . I had a bad experience of this double standards that exists in these "european" countries.

And I dont try to discourage her I hope she finds what she is looking for ... After all the market is free everyone can apply.

Basically I do not want to go back to UK, I want Europe. I teach a shortage subject and have a good level of experience , chemistry is normally a desirable subject in any country, we have savings, I don't want , nor expect, the standard of living I have in dubai. I would like to work as a teacher, I love teaching, I would like to live in a small apartment, drive a reliable second hand car, my husband is an excellent mechanic, and be able to eat at local cafe and drink coffee. We don't smoke or drink. I would like tv with some UK program's including football, have Internet.
I would try and do some private tutoring, my husband could try and do some part time car work

Does this still seem a hopeless situation?

It's not a hopeless situation. The economic downturn has created a lot of uncertainty which is worth bearing in mind. But there are some very good private schools in Cyprus. Until recently there was always demand for part-time and supply teachers particularly in science. I can't say what it's like now. But it's worth getting in touch or checking their websites for any vacancies.

Do you actually live in Cyprus because it doesn't sound like it.

There are some good private schools in Cyprus eg the American Academy in Larnaca, Heritage, Foleys, Logos, Grammar School, St Mary's, to name but some Etc in Limaasol. Don't know about other areas There are some which are not so good.
There is some demand in the private sector for supply teachers in most subjects, as most private schools are unlikely to have more than one specialist in any subject, so they need external back up if the main teacher is out of action, and for part time teachers as they cannot justify full time employment of every teacher. My wife was part time at one school. In the other she was full time. There is no harm in asking the schools if they have an opening.

Thanks I did read this article. I am considering sept 2014 move so I do have time to assess the situation over a longer period of time. Would you consider north Cyprus as a possibility? They don't have the euro so perhaps a better option? Thanks
