The National Council has appointed Ambassador Andreas Mavroyiannis as negotiator for the Greek Cypriot community, in the UN-led peace talks expected to resume in Autumn.
Mavroyiannis is currently the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Previously he served as Deputy Minister to the President for European Affairs and his portfolio included the overall responsibility for preparing and seeing through the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, in the second semester of 2012.
For the past couple of decades, the Presidents of the Republic have served as negotiators of the Greek Cypriot side in the direct talks between the island’s two communities.
Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides said that the National Council made decisions regarding the way the Council will operate from now on, adding that the next meeting will take place beginning of September and issues of substance as regard the Cyprus problem will be on the agenda.
