“State” a primary culprit in drug crimes
Lawyer Barış Mamalı from the Superiority of Law Movement said that the “state,” which has not taken a single step towards the solution of the illicit drug problem in the north, is instead a primary culprit. Mamalı argued that the problem has reached an inconceivable magnitude because the “state policy” is to support the mafia order.
According to Abbas Elmas’ news report published in Kıbrıs Postası, Mamalı criticised the fact that drug users are being sent to prison instead of being treated. He stated that 95% of the people imprisoned for crimes related to drugs in the rest of the world are dealers or producers, while in northern Cyprus, 95% of those imprisoned are users.
“It should be clearly put forward that the “state” has failed in fighting against drugs,” Mr. Mamalı was quoted as saying. “If you are an island country and you are so impotent that you cannot prevent illicit drugs from coming into your country, then it is debatable whether you are really a “state” at all”.
Underlining the fact that the age for use of drugs has fallen to 11 in northern Cyprus, Mr. Mamalı asked why none of the “governments” have developed a program to fight against drugs until now. “Is it that they are not intelligent or clever enough, or do they have a huge interest in the illicit drug business?” he asked.
