560 bottles of booze in Ankara State Theatre’s truck
MERSİN – Customs officials in the Mersin port of Turkey found 560 bottles of alcoholic beverages in the truck, which was carrying the décor of the Ankara State Theatre from the northern part of Cyprus to Turkey.
According to the news report in the Havadis newspaper, the Ankara State Theatre was in the northern part of Cyprus to stage the play named ‘Hürrem Sultan’ on 2 September within the framework of the Cyprus Theatre Festival. The theatre actors and actresses returned to Ankara on 3 September by plane, while the theatre’s truck carrying the décor and costumes, boarded a ferry to go to the Mersin port in Turkey. The customs officials at the Mersin port found 560 bottles of alcoholic drinks – mostly whiskey – hidden in the truck. The bottles had the names of some of the actors and actresses on them.
According to the news report, décor trucks are not allowed to carry any personal belongings and the load and weight of these trucks should be the same during exit and entry into the country. It has been revealed that the truck was loaded with 18 crates of filled plastic bottles as it left Turkey to come to the northern part of Cyprus. Despite this preliminary preparation, the truck weighed more during entry into Turkey, and thus prompted the customs officials to conduct a search.
The Mersin Public Prosecution Office has launched an investigation about the incident.
