Good morning/afternoon,

I've just joined the forum & thought I'd say hello. I'm looking to learn as much about Cyprus as I can. I've never visited, (although I've visited nearly every other Greek island!).

My father says that I can't visit, as they'll put me in the military. I'm 33. Dad left Cyprus in '64 along with the rest of my family, & has lived in England ever since. He did some sort of military service when he returned in the '90's.

Is this true btw? My knees are shot, I'm unfit & don't speak the language (although I am learning both?!); I'd make the most useless soldier in the world :D

Anyway, glad to be here & looking forward to making some friends :?:

Welcome! :D

Don't worry about the military service. You will undergo a medical test, and if you are fit enough you will have the privilege of serving your country. Probably 6 months. Good luck!

Welcome enigmatic...

If you're visiting CY on hol, for less than 3 months, you're not obliged to serve.

You will however need an exit permit to leave CY. Take your passport and return air ticket to an NG office and they'll give you one.

..and Cyprus isn't actually a 'Greek island', though many here would have you believe it is!

Thanks for the replies everyone!

Gr8 news that I can visit on holiday :) , my auntie's over there atm, so it'll be good to visit. As to the military service, it may be something I'll look into when I'm a bit fitter, & my Greek is up to spec.

As for it not being a Greek island, I'm not sure that's a debate I want to get into. My grandfather was a Turkish Cypriot & my grandmother a Greek Cypriot, both languages were spoken in my house. I know it's a sensitive subject, so I'll just steer clear :|

What an unexpected enigma! Probably left most of these forumers slack jawed.

First half cast I ever met. Being of Turkish origin, it is unlikely you will do any service in the RoC, but if you were to go to the illegal occupied areas, the Turks might get you yo do it.
