Turkey Rocked By Doping Scandal
Eight Turkish athletes, including an Olympic silver medallist, have been reportedly caught using banned substances.
The revelation comes just days after eight Turkish weightlifters failed doping tests at a training camp ahead of the Mediterranean Games.
Among the latest group of athletes to fail a doping test is 2004 Olympic silver medallist hammer thrower Esref Apak.
The other seven athletes are reported to be made up of runners and other hammer throwers.
Officials in Turkey have called on the those athletes competing in the Mediterranean Games to withdraw from the competition.
The latest doping scandal to rock Turkey will come as a huge setback to Istanbul's bid to host the 2020 Olympics.
Turkey's largest city is competing with Toyko and Madrid to hold the Games, with the IOC set to announce the host city in September.
The Mediterranean Games, intended by Turkey as a vehicle to showcase it's capabilities to host a major event, has been marred by controversy.
Last week, it's opening ceremony was overshadowed by anti-government protests.
That was followed by eight Turkish weightlifters being withdrawn from the competition after testing positive for unidentified banned substances.
In May, Olympic 1,500 metre gold medallist Asli Cakir and European indoor hurdles champion Nevin Yanit were charged after failing doping tests.
