But I understand that originally it was used as a term for someone held in high esteem ie a scribe (writer) because of the ink from the squid (kalimari) they used

it is kind of like the Aussie "pen pusher".
If it was a term of high esteem, then Cypriot Nationaslists will never use it for the Greeks!
Greeks must earn our respect. It can never be taken for granted.
And boy, Greece has a lot of work to do to earn our respect right now!
