A chap flying three flags of the Republic outside his shop in Occupied Famagusta was arrested by "police".

A display brought on by Turkish PM Erdogan saluting the Flag of the Republic at the Opening Ceremony of the Mersin Games, at which the Turkish Organisers have embargoed a "team" from a supposed "country" called "trnc"

Turkish Cypriot arrested for displaying Cyprus flag

A Turkish Cypriot man and his wife were briefly detained by authorities in the breakaway north because they put up the flag of Cyprus at their home and shop in Famagusta, it was reported on Saturday.

Daily newspaper Africa said the man was protesting the fact that Turkish Primer Minister Tayyip Erdogan had saluted Cyprus and the Cypriot flag during the Mediterranean Games in Mersin.

The breakaway state had not been invited.

The man was arrested along with his wife on Friday but they were later released after the intervention of politicians, the daily said.

He had also been taken to court three years ago over a similar incident but was not penalised.

Africa said the couple had also carried the flag of Cyprus during protests against Erdogan in north, over the events at Istanbul’s Gezi park.

What started as a small-scale action by environmentalists opposed to government plans to build on Gezi Park, a rare green space in Istanbul’s teeming centre, quickly became a broader expression of dissatisfaction with Erdogan and his government.

(About 20 secs in, what passes as a "trnc" "policeman" is tearing up one of the flags...!!!)

The only thing to add at the mo is one source in the Occupied Areas publishes a statement made to "police" by the patriotic flag-flyer who said...

‘I do not recognise the fake flag of a fake country, these are my flags.’

how can you not understand the official language of cyprus, you should be a shamed of yourself and the charlui. what kind of cypriot are you. you must from karpaz.

your interpreting is crap, i would keep my day job if i was you. he does not say once this is his flag.

one bit for nothing. if he becomes an mp he will reclaim his seat in the groc.

You're rubbish at both official languages as well as English...

The bottom line is that this chap gave his opinion to "police" and it was to piss on "trnc" and to insist that his flag is the Flag of the Republic...

Hold the turkish-speaker... not required. On second thoughts, hold Vordo and give him a good kicking for trying to deceive CF yet again.

Been doing a bit of research on this chap, which hasn't been easy as there's bugger all-coverage of the incident, in what passes for a press in the Occupied Areas.

The chap is Koray Basdogrultmaci, who appears to be someone who isn't terribly fond of "trnc" and he has a history of showing his support for the Republic.

This is him, again with flags of the Republic, somewhere in the Occupied Areas, from a couple of years ago...
