Perhaps I'm yearning for the traditional "violi and laouti" weddings of a past era, maybe I'm just old fashioned or simply have not moved on, steeped in the past and the many happy memories of village weddings that lasted 3 days !!
I recently attended a family wedding, although the start. before the church, was very traditional with a violin and a laouto, the stolisma of nymfi, thoroughly enjoyable and promising of what was to come. Alas, what came was noise deafening unpleasant to the ear English music inflicted upon us by a couple of DJs sporting those ugly dirty looking beards that most young Cypriots now have, I hate beards either on men or women !!
I made my excuses and departed early before irreparable damage to my eardrums.
On another occasion, a wedding at a rather posh hotel. thoroughly nontraditional and a bore. Here's your envelope, na zisete, a nibble or two at the nontraditional food on offer, a glass of mediocre wine and bobs your uncle!
I consider the Greek music to be the finest and most enjoyable "Ylenti " and dancing music in the entire universe. No other music can create the atmosphere that Greek music does, a tsifteteli, a sirto, a zeimbekiko, all thoroughly enjoyable and "danceable".
Youngsters now getting married seem to prefer English music, ever that horrid disgusting rapping stuff, even the bloody Greeks rap!!
What an ugly sound they make too. There is no class, no sophistication just jungle crap.
Back to the beards now. Anyone knows why the young Cypriots have these unsightly ugly whiskers on their faces ?
Do they perhaps consider beards as fashionable? Well they are if you are in a third world Islamic country but not in Cyprus for crying our ....very loud!!
In 9 days I shall be in Limassol, I swear that I too will ...grow a horrid beard!!!
