That way, it leads the way for when the International Olympic Committee meets in September. By going, it sets a precedent that it's safe for them to award the 2020 Olympics to Istanbul.

Major opportunity missed.

You see what I mean now! You are too Greek and your actions are governed by passion and not common sense!

We have to go. Our Football Teams have been going to Turkey and Turkish Football Teams have been coming to the RoC.

There is no way we could Boycott without it blowing up in OUR faces.

We would look pretty silly if Greece boycotted the games for our sake but we still went along, oblivious!

Anyway, time will tell ...

Meanwhile - Good luck to the team and hope they make it worthwhile.

Even if we Boycott, greece would still go.

In fact I bet that Greece would tell Cyprus that its decision to Boycott would be costly and Greece would be right about that!

Why do you think Turkey does not Boycott RoC Sporting events that are sanctioned by FIFA and UEFA?

The spawn of settlers are Turks so can only compete under the the Turkish flag.

TC athletes are allowed to participate in the RoC Team. I believe 1 TC athlete tried to represent the RoC at the Olympics but not sure what came of this.

News coming out that protests spread to Mersin as the Sultan was opening the games. The stadium was filled with AKP supporters bussed in to avoid protests. In town, people were demonstrating and met with water cannons. Opposition MPs joined a sit in. Rubber bullets fired, several people injured. Hope our athletes are safe.

I saw part of the opening ceremony on the Turkish TV tonight and as the RoC athletes came out with the Cyprus flag, as the case was with the other participating countries, the country name was written on the screen in Turkish and English. It read "Kibris" in Turkish and "Cyprus" in English. I also did not see any flags of the "trnc" anywhere, unless they appeared after I stopped watching once Cyprus came out. It was a very dignified opening ceremony.

I'm sure none of this commotion will be broadcasted. Carefully angled shots to make it all look "good" for their Olympic bid.

Turkey on its best behaviour (for a bit).

Yes, apparently to avoid protests against Erdogan the stadium crowd was made up of AKP supporters brought in from nearby towns. Outside, there were serious clashes between protesters and police with several people reported injured.

Good to hear that Cyprus was able to carry its flag with pride. I don't see how the 'trnc' flag would be on display as it isn’t a member of the Olympic committee. And Turkey dare not jeopardise its already precarious Olympic bid.

Great news Kikapu!

Now let's hope our athletes represent the RoC with pride and do well.
