Greek government suspends state TV, radio broadcasts to save

Postby kurupetos » Wed Jun 12, 2013 12:11 am

...money

Greek state TV and radio have begun going off the air, hours after the government said it would temporarily close all state-run broadcasts, with the loss of about 2,500 job cuts, as part of its cost-cutting drive.

Hellenic Broadcasting Corp., or ERT, broadcasts went dead in several areas Tuesday, less than an hour before midnight, when the government said all signals would end.

It said ERT has been formally disbanded, and authorities would "secure" the corporation's facilities.

The government said the company will reopen "as soon as possible" with a smaller workforce. It wasn't clear how long that would take, and whether all stations would reopen.

The move heralds the first direct public sector layoffs in more than three years of painful austerity demanded by the bailed-out nation's international creditors.

It’s one thing to overhaul ERT, it’s going a bit far to shut it down completely. Journalists' union has called for strike across press, broadcast and print, starting 6pm local Thursday.

Samaras is taking a big risk. This could lead to gov’t crisis...

The plan is to shut it down and re-open it with a smaller workforce. Not the best way to go about it though. Samaras having his Erdogan moment...

ERT actually makes a profit. Strange they're going to shut it down, pay compensation then re-open it again. How will that save money? My guess is they're doing this to meet Troika demands to cut public jobs by a certain number. Otherwise it makes no sense.

How does ERT make a profit when it is subsidised by the government? Instead of two and half thousand employees, the new ERT will only have around a thousand, it will not be Government owned, and I am sure the salaries will be much lower.

Very sad but I guess they didn't want to go the way of the BBC which just shows reruns and employs ancient broadcasters that are desperate to carry on talking gibberish useless nonsense at any cost.

That is how ERT had become, and CyBC!
