Cyprus asks Israel's help in ridding of old munitions dumped offshore

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4389745,00.html

Cyprus' defense minister says he has asked Greece and Israel for help in getting rid of a large amount of discarded army munitions that were dumped off the island nation's southern coast between 1980 and 1993.

Fotiou said there are 167 types of munitions dumped by Cypriots including mines, hand grenades and artillery shells at the bottom of the sea, but their exact location is uncertain. (AP)

I suppose there's no shame in asking for help.

No shame there either! Can't do any harm!

But, we must be weary when asking for political help because every single time there is more damage than good because Greece is just far too wishy washy and defeatist and a big appeaser to the Turkish Regime. You could easily think they are helping Turkey reach all its objectives.

The RoC should have asked for assistance from Britain. They have 2 SBAs and all the infrastructure already is in Cyprus and they would be happy to help.

Sure, and they could also ask the 40,000 Turkish troops to help. I'm sure they too "would be happy to help".

Sure they would help and one more thing!

In 1974, Britain was prepared to go to war against Turkey. The Royal Navy had every Turkish Ship shaddowed and British diplomats, the then PM and Foreign Affairs Minister was opposed to the Turkish Invasion, but unfortunately for us, Kissinger and Nixon were in charge and told the Brits to stand down. Even Australian SAS were being deployed in Cyprus as well as tge infamous Ghurka Regiment and Royal Marines.

I keep telling Cypriots to not oppose any tidal waves of international diplomacy, just try and manage it. That's what caused the Greek Coup and Nixon out to destroy Cyprus and Makarios. We made ourselves a threat and tgen we became a target to be elliminated!

This misses the point. It is not the asking for help that is the issue. Once again we have a issue with munitions that have been inappropriately dealt with, with risk to vital infrastructure projects. Had help been asked for before the stuff was dumped in the sea then it would have been a lot easier and cheaper to deal with. Now the task of dealing with the weapons is lot worse....

I don't think it is that much of a stuff up. Perhaps insensitive to the environment, and dangerous but Cyprus was not the only country to dump munitions into the ocean. US and Australia would dump all kinds of things into the ocean. I recall it was even joked about the kind of hardware and munitions that would go overboard. Tanks, aircraft, bombs, shells, guns and so on.

There are enough arms in the ocean between Australia and Vietnam to fight a world war.

Yup your right, not remembering where is the problem 'Short Dumping' i.e not in designated areas, of course the chemical weapons are the worse I suppose. I remember seeing a news reel of the evacuation of Saigon, The sailors pushing 'copters over the side to make room for more..... If you work for PMCs, you have to dump weapons and munitions somewhere when entering port of a country that doesn't allow that sort of thing to be carried in there waters.
