Honestly, if you could afford it, wouldn't you send your kids to the Anerican Academy rather than rely on sub standard Greek Teachers?

There are private Orthodox Schools in Oz. Kids Registered at the Anglican private schools! Why? Because they are not Greek ones and better than the quite good public system.

All the good Greek Teachers wouldn't work at these Greek Schools either.

Maybe I'm racist....

The funny thing is that the 'American Academy' name is just a franchise. You just pay up and get the name, it's still operated by Cypriots.

You're absolutely correct. The name is there because as well as teaching in Greek, it teaches to the English curriculum as well (I believe) for entry to American Universities. Sad when a Greek-teaching school in Cyprus, overseen by the Cypriot education ministers is only applauded by the forum fools because it has the name "American" attached.

No dear! It is applauded because it caters for a more Anglicised curiculum so that Cypriots can enter the American and British universities and gain international experience which can only help the RoC!

In other words, it is said to go over and beyond the RoC curiculum in order to prepare students for America and UK.

As for afternoon education, some pupils at private schools get it too, and it s not always happening because the teaching is weak in the normal class room time,

There are some children who need it for the reason that they are new to Cyprus , possibly with poor language skills in the language of the school, and there differences in the Syllabus between what they learnt in EG Russia and what thy are now learning in Cyprus with gaps in knowledge that need to be filled. in the public sector some pupils study GCSE and A levels to improve their chances of going to eg UK universities.

However it affects not just pupils in last year of school and I suspect in many cases afternoon teaching has become a nice little earner, tax free of course, so the teachers arrange matters to make it necessary.

Both so called American Academies are a bloody disgrace.
My brother recently retired from one such educational establishment.
I do not have his permission to relate his experiences after serving for more than 20 years.
I know a great deal about this "organization" that runs the Academies, I'm rather outspoken but I think if I know whats good for me I should remain silent.

which of the American Academies was it? Larnaca, Limassol or Paphos?

I don't know which establishment your brother retired from but making such a grievance implicates this school in Paphos.

We made inquiries a few years back and having spoken to one of the Cypriot Ministers of Education they assured me that this school even though it's private, in order to operate in the Republic of Cyprus it has approval from the Cypriot Minister of Education and Culture. In fact, I heard a lot of good reports and it has a high University entry rate including University of Cyprus (which is very difficult to get into) and many UK universities.

I think it's a really poor show when foreigners denigrate Cypriot schools purely from gossip (as stud has done - what's the point of his question to us?) and prejudice as the usual forum fools do.

GiG, before you start accusing anyone of gossipping try asking the teachers ......they are underdogs who need support.

Indeed there is no criticism at all on my part about the ability of the teaching staff or the results they achieve..... but they do a good job and they deserve to get paid per their contracts.

I think I will need to backtrack a little.

I supported the school because I believed it made a positive contribution to Cypriot education.

I shall still keep an open mind, however I have received new information which is most alarming. I would not send my kids there unless I was satisfied about certain matters that were bought to my attention.

If these allegations are accurate, then the school should be exposed, but I will not do it because I have given my word.

NOTE: this does not involve the American Academy in Larnaca, which is an entirely separate business

Who cares? Greek education is free. :)

When Elam/Golden dawn take over there will be special re education camps for CBBB, GR and the other fools in Cyprus/Greece.

So why didn't you ask the teachers instead of asking us?
