It’s not that simple. Turkey blundered and missed the chance to open its ports for nothing. It attached conditions and boxed itself into a corner. Even Turkish diplomats admit they screwed up.
Instead of getting a clear run on its EU accession process for years to come they wanted something in return. Now they daren’t open their ports for fear they will look like they are making a concession.
And now there are bigger chips on the table. Smart move of the GCs to bring Varosha into the equation. We might just call your bluff on Ercan. Personally I doubt that Turkey is going to return Varosha in exchange for a few direct charter flights a week to the occupied areas. As the airport would have to be under ROC sovereignty and EU supervision, I doubt the ‘prize’ would be big enough for Turkey. Let’s wait and see.

You are living on another planet if you think that Turkey’s EU accession is not dependant upon a solution in Cyprus that is acceptable to Greek Cypriots.
