The Prime-Minster's office has said that Erdoğan, in speaking of male and female students living in the same building, was referring to the difficulties created by the shortage of student accommodation and has said that there will be no inspections to check whether or not male and female students are living together.

Following denials by some people in his party that recent comments made by Prime-Minister Erdoğan pointed to a state crackdown on male and female students sharing the same accommodation, views expressed by the Prime-Minister at a party group meeting suggest that this is precisely what is on the cards. An excerpt from his comments:

[my translation]
As a party having a conservative democratic identity holding the office of responsibility, mothers’ and fathers’, parent’s children are entrusted to us. We have not permitted and do not permit girls and boys to live together in state dormitories. [...] We are speedily continuing with efforts to separate our girls from boy students in this manner at our dormitories; we are presently seventy percent of the way toward achieving this. In some places, as we are not capable of meeting needs through dormitories, difficulties are experienced when it comes to staying in houses. Intelligence in this regard is reaching the police and provincial governates. Based on this, provincial governates are intervening in such situations. [...] In such places, it is uncertain what is going on; all kinds of mixed-up things may happen. Then mothers and fathers scream out, “Where is the state?” These steps are being taken and will be taken to reassure them that the state is present. We, as a conservative democratic regime, are obliged to intervene against these things.

The Provincial Governor of Adana, Hüseyin Avni Coş, has made the following statement with reference to the Prime-Minister’s comments on male and female students sharing the same accommodation:

[my translation]
Naturally, efforts are being made in line with our esteemed Prime-Minister’s instructions. His comments have lead us to revise our efforts. When we looked into this, I learnt that efforts in this regard were in any case underway and the necessary efforts were being made with great sensitivity. Our colleagues are looking into the details. Our citizens are uneasy and have complaints about this matter and have passed on negative comments. This will most certainly be assessed and the necessary legal steps taken. Our citizens’ satisfaction comes before all else. Of course, the guarding of general morality is one of the duties of the state. In this sense, our citizens’ sensitivities and protecting youth, protecting youth from bad habits, is one of the duties assigned by the Constitution to the state. In this context, the state will, through all of its institutions and organisations, perform the duty incumbent on it. This Provincial Governate is also, through all of its institutions and organisations, performing the duties incumbent on it.

Police officer Selçuk Bal, who was identified as being one of the policemen who beat Ali İsmail Korkmaz in the streets of Eskişehir on the night of 2-3 June, leading to the death of this 19-year-old student, will be attending the hearing into Korkmaz’s murder on 20 November ... as a witness. Eskişehir Serious Criminal Court No 2 has sent a request to the police asking for wide-ranging security measures to be taken on the day prior to the hearing.

Tim, this is the profile of an average "progressive" south Cypriot who follows your translations on this forum. Such a waste of your efforts really.

You really do not understand, I am afraid. The fact that this thread has amazingly high Google ratings means that it us not only the regulars on this forum who are following it. However, you may have done me a great favour. On average, I am speeding two hours a day trawling the Turkish press (well, certain papers that are favourable to the Gezi protests) and putting up translated summaries of reports about what I think are significant developments. I was doing this in the belief that I was giving a small amount of support to the movement. So far, I have had no indication that anybody out there, either involved in the Gezi movement or who genuinely is looking for information about what is going on apart from what the Cemaat-controlled media has to say, appreciates these efforts, so, as you say, I am wasting my time and I have better things to do. Thank you, and my profuse apologies if I caused you any offence.

A notice has been posted by the administrator at the entrance to an apartment block used by students in the Üsküdar district of Istanbul reading:
“Some people are staying here in mixed sex groups. The building and apartment do not lend themselves towards such things. If you see such people, notify the police.”
