Interesting about US and Turkey's relationship. How bad will it get and how will it reflect on Cyprus? Does the ROC settle now with the "trnc" or, like 2004 and AP, do we wait in the hope that soured US/Turkey relations will get us a better deal? Would Akrotiri be a more reliable base for Uncle Sam than Incirlik?

"The US is a superpower and Turkey is a middle-sized power, at best. Nevertheless, Turkish politicians now think of Turkey as a global power.Interestingly, a large segment of Turkish citizens is already persuaded of this. True or not, Ankara's official self-perception is as simple as this: Turkey is a great power. Therefore, Ankara will not hesitate to become involved in any issue in the region. This could be costly, both for Turkey and its allies. However, presenting Turkey as a great power and acting as a great power are official principles of Turkish foreign policy now. In this vein, Ankara sees the large geographical expanse from Kosovo to northern Iraq as its legitimate zone of influence."

Long may this continue!

It is only a matter of time before they completely stuff up and when they do, they will be made a to pay a heavy price.

Unfortunately, they are just a lot of talk but no walk.

without the backing of the West and mostly the usa, Turkey isnt much more then a paper tiger. Once the usa pulls away, a small country like Greece could wipe them off the map.

Boys. boys, boys.... and Lordo.

This thread is poss the most comprehensive account of the protests that exists in the English language.

It's CF at its finest.

Can we keep it that way please, by not going too far from the protests... 8)

Perhaps a new thread for those who wish to highlight the deterioration of Turkey's relations in the area and with the West would be appropriate...???

Happy Republic Day Türkiyeeeee. Happy 90th anniversary! Like all Gezi protestors, I would like to say how much I admire Great Atatürk who kicked the enemy out of our lands. Marmaray opens on this historic day

My thoughts go out to all those who are fighting to defend the democratic, secular Republic of Turkey on this Republic Day.
