The opposition Republican People's Party showing some backbone by condemning the assaults on the environmentalists at the Ankara ODTU.

Reported by Zaman ... http://www.todayszaman.com/news-329499- ... orest.html , from which we also learn the extent of the destruction to woodland with plans to fell 3,000 trees ...!!!

"... Republican People's Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has said that the only way those running the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality -- whose teams raided the Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ) campus and cut down trees to make way for a new road last Friday -- were able to gain entry to the university was through violence.
“These [people] don't have the skills to enter into that university, [so] they enter using tanks and sticks,” Kılıçdaroğlu said, criticizing a riot-police backed and Ankara Municipality-organized operation to fell nearly 3,000 trees on the university campus. ..."

Certain members of the Support Committee Jury of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, which awards an annual grant to theatre groups, are said to be opposed to giving a grant to theatre groups that have been vocal in their support for the Gezi protests.

The mayor of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has said that it will not be possible to halt the government’s unjust practices by fighting them in the courts, and the only way that cities will be protected is to resist in the spirit of Gezi. In his address to the general assembly of the Association of Social Democratic Municipalities, he said:

"Until today, we have managed to halt more than 90% of unjust privatisations and incorrect practices through application to the judiciary. Henceforth, it will be hard for us to halt them. We won by fighting through the courts in lawsuits that lasted months and years. But, that loophole has been closed with laws passed in Ankara. There is nothing that we can do any more. The point reached by the Ministry of Justice and the legal system is apparent. Even if this is not apparent, the judiciary will decide in accordance with legislation. There is not even any legislation left. Henceforth, in order for us to protect Izmir and for you to protect Istanbul and Antalya, there remains no other option except for, above all, Metropolitan Municipalities, along with all municipalities, assembly members, civil society organisations and everybody to struggle in a spirit of participation, that is to say, to protect our children’s futures in unison with the people by spreading the spirit of Gezi into Turkey’s capillary vessels and fighting."
