In the case of Ali İsmail Korkmaz’s killing (the 19 year old who died 38 days after being severely beaten up during Gezi Park protests in the city of Eskişehir on 2 June), the public prosecutor has submitted the indictment to the court in which he calls for the suspects, remanded police officer Mevlüt Saldoğan (41), baker İsmail Koyuncu (35), his relatives Ramazan Koyuncu (27) and Muhammet Vatansever (32) along with Ebubekir Harlar'ın (20), who works at a flat bread establishment, and also the police officers whose statements were taken and who were then released Şaban Gökpunar (36), Hüseyin Engin (43) and Yalçın Akbulut (36), to be sentenced to life imprisonment for intentional manslaughter with criminal intent.

Istanbul Penal Court of First Instance No 50 has sent back the indictment prepared with reference to 23 people who were arrested merely for being in possession of object like helmets on 12 June in the Gezi protests, saying that “masks, helmets, goggles, motor helmets, vinegar, solution and bandages are not weapons.”

From Hurriyet...

"...The Council of Europe has urged Turkish authorities to quickly implement European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) judgments regarding police’s use of excessive force against demonstrators, noting the flood of new applications on such violence..."

"...“The [European Court of Human Rights] continues receiving new ... applications and delivering judgments finding violations of the Convention on account of unjustified interferences with the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and of the excessive use of force during demonstrations, as well as the lack of an effective remedy in this respect,” the statement of the Council said, while calling for additional measures. ..."

Very damning report published by Amnesty today on the response of the Turkish State to the Gezi Park protests.

Amongst the findings...

Protesters and others were severely beaten, resulting in one death and scores of injuries
Police frequently fired plastic bullets directly at protesters' heads and upper bodies
Tear gas canisters were fired directly at protesters and bystanders, and sometimes into residential buildings and medical facilities
Chemical irritants were added to water cannon supply tanks
Women protesters were sexually abused by law enforcement officials
Live ammunition was used, killing one protester

Pınar T., who was arrested in Dolmabahçe, Istanbul on 2 June in the course of the Gezi Park protests, has identified the policeman who threatened to rape her from a photograph.

Pınar T., alleging that in the course of her detention she was beaten by the police and that the police insulted her and threatened to rape her, made a complaint to the public prosecutor’s office. The public prosecutor’s office subsequently launched an investigation into these claims. Meanwhile, Pınar T. has identified the policeman named Süleyman who threatened to rape her from a photograph taken at the time of her arrest. Other witnesses have confirmed that the policeman in the photograph was the officer who made the threat. Pınar T.’s lawyer will submit the photograph to the public prosecutor’s office so that it can be added to the file.

At the same time, public proceedings have been initiated against Pınar T. and two other people arrested along with her for breach of the Meetings and Demonstration law, allegedly for failing to disperse when ordered to do so, in which the prosecution is calling for a three year prison sentence.

The official forensic report has substantiated that Abdullah Cömert, who lost his life on 3 June in the course of the Gezi Park protests, was killed as a result of being hit in the head with a tear gas cartridge. He was found to have a single wound to the head that was consistent with having been hit by such a cartridge.

Plans are afoot in Turkey to introduce a measure to be known as "preventative detention" whereby the police will be permitted, without applying to any outside authority, to detain for 12-24 hours any person they suspect of intending to cause a disturbance at a protest or demonstration.

A group of students who were not admitted to the 2013-2014 academic year opening ceremony at Istanbul University staged a sit-in protest in front of the university’s science faculty. In the course of the protest, they held photographs of Ali İsmail Korkmaz, who lost his life in the course of the Gezi Park protests, in front of their faces.

The hack group Roj Hack has obtained the text of a speech made by Fetullah Gülen, the leader of a powerful Islamist sect in Turkey, to a meeting attended by policemen, bureaucrats, journalists, businessmen and academics. He apparently asked those present not to take notes, but it seems that somebody ignored this instruction.

If true, the following words attributed to Gülen, in my opinion, are the clearest pointer yet that the AKP and Erdoğan are on their way out:

AK Parti bizim elimizde, bizzat yönettiğimiz bir kurum. Gördünüz işte ne kadar üçkağıtçı, düzenbaz, yalancı, dalavereci varsa üşüştü. O yüzden bu partiyi esas almayın arkadaşlar. Bugün bunu destekledik, yarın baktık çürüdü yeni bir şeyi destekleriz. Onun içinden yeni bir hareketi ortaya çıkarırız.

[translation] The AK party is in our hands; it is an entity that we ourselves control. As you have well seen, all manner of crooks, cheats, liars and tricksters have flocked together. So, do not adopt this party as the basis, colleagues. One day we supported this, the next day we looked and it had rotted and we will support something new. We will bring a new movement out of it.
