A large number of arrests have been made in the course of the events in Taksim. Some citizens attempted to free people from the police as they were being arrested. Plain clothes and rapid response policemen intervened when a large group of journalists wished to take shots of this. They pushed them away using riot shields. In the process, a reporter was injured in the arm and was taken to hospital by his colleagues.

Well, I am logging off now, but that was quite a night.

I cannot begin to express my admiration for all of these brave people who have endured tear gas and worse to stand up for their fundamental human right to peacefully demonstrate.

The message surely is that, unlike the people of Russia, who seem prepared to tolerate Putin's dictatorship - and I would be only too delighted to see them liberated from it - the people of Turkey are going to take no more from the bunch of Islamofascist thugs that have taken over the state. The sooner the latter get the message and start compromising and moving in the direction of pluralism, the better for all concerned.

Western press pretty quiet about events today.

... however, CNN reports on demos in various cities ...

... " Hatay, Turkey (CNN) -- Clashes erupted across Turkey on Tuesday after a predawn skirmish between police and protesters left one demonstrator dead in the border province of Hatay.
Crowds of demonstrators gathered in the cities of Istanbul, Ankara and Hatay to denounce the death of Ahmet Atakan, a 22-year-old who recently graduated from accounting school... "
