Gezi Park has been closed and tight security measures are in place in the Taksim area of Istanbul in anticipation of a protests this evening in response to the death of Ahmet Atakan.

Following Ahmet Atakan’s burial this afternoon, there was a demonstration in Antakya attended by around 1000 people, claiming that Atakan was killed by the police. The police intervened using tear gas and water cannons, also affecting Republican People’s Party members of parliament who were in attendance.

Intervention in side streets.
Our reporter İdris Emen comments... The police are intervening with intense tear gas in virtually all side streets along Istiklal Street. At certain points, plastic bullets are also being used.

Tear gas and fireworks in use
The police have started to intervene against a group that has assembled at Sıraselviler.Group members are replying to the police with fireworks.

'TAKSIM IS NOT A DEMONSTRATION VENUE'
The police are not permitting Taksim Solidarity components who have arrived at the entrance to the Square from Istiklal Street to enter the square. The police are making announcements: “Disperse. Taksim Square is not a demonstration venue.”

Gas has emptied Taksim
People, under the effect of the intense tear gas, have by and large vacated Istiklal Street and the side streets opening onto this street. The police are at the top of the streets and the protestors are dispersed within the side streets.

Tourists under gas
The police are making very intense use of tear gas in Polis in Taksim. Some tourists are seen to have been affected by gas and are reacting to the police.

Hot pursuit in Istiklal Street
Intervention in the form of tear gas and paint balls fired from armoured cars is taking place against demonstrators who are assembling into small groups. Demonstrators who have dived into side streets are coming back into the street a little later.

Crowds that assembled at the Bull Statue in Kadıköy have started marching towards the ferry terminal. Şenay Aydemir reports...

Disturbances continue in Armutlu quarter where Ahmet Atakan lived. The police are making abundant use of tear gas and plastic bullets, and there are tens of casualties.

Protestors shown pouring onto a ferry at Kadıköy ferry terminal to cross the Bosphorous and join the demonstrations in Taksim. The captain has climbed to the top of the ferry to tell people that the vessel has a capacity of 1,200. In spite of this, hundreds of people are streaming on board.

The ferry left Kadıköy late at 1945 for the European side, with hundreds of people left waiting for the next one.
