A group of about 100 attempted to march to the Istanbul Judicial complex in Çağlayan demanding that the policemen responsible for injuring 14-year-old Berkin Elvan be brought justice. Berkin Elvan has now been in intensive care for 86 days after he was struck in the head by a tear gas canister on 12 June during the Gezi protests - apparently he was not even taking part in the protests and was on his way to buy some bread. The march was blocked by the police, who announced to the participants that their protest was illegal. Three people appeared from a side street and started to throw stones and molotof cocktails at the police, upon which the police replied with tear gas.
According to an announcement by Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, a report has been filed with the public prosecution against the Republican People’s Party members of parliament Aylin Nazlıaka, İlhan Cihaner and Hüseyin Aygün for participating in the protests against the new road in the vicinity of the Middle East Technical University and preventing municipal teams from working.
22-year-old Ahmet Atakan was killed last night in the city of Antakya after being hit in the head with a tear gas capsule (probably manufactured by so-called Non-Lethal Technologies Inc.) as police intervened against a demonstration in support of the protests against the building of a new road near the Middle East Technical University. He thus became the sixth fatality since the start of the Gezi Park protests.
Contradictory explanations are being put forward for Ahmet Atakan’s death.
In official statements from the Ministry of Justice and the Provincial Governate, Ahmet Atakan’s death is being attributed to a fall from a high place. However, this is contradicted in a statement by doctor Selim Matkap, who attended the preliminary autopsy held at the hospital where the 22-year-old died:
‘We encountered no findings on Atakan’s body proving that he fell from a tall building. There are two most significant findings: one of them bleeding in the lungs, and the other trauma to the head.
On his head there was an impression fracture, known as blunt trauma, and bruising. One of these was the cause of death. These cannot be attributed to a fall from a high place.’
Republican People’s Party member of parliament for Hatay, Mevlüt Dudu, rejecting claims that Ahmet Atakan fell from a building, has said, ‘There are eye witnesses to the effect that tear gas capsules were fired at very close range from an armoured vehicle.’
The six people to have lost their lives as a result of the response to the ongoing peaceful protests that broke out in Turkey at the end of May:
Ahmet Atakan, aged 22, Commissioner Mustafa Sarı, aged 27, Ali İsmail Korkmaz, aged 19, Mehmet Ayvalıtaş, aged 20, Abdullah Cömert, aged 22, and Ethem Sarısülük, aged 26.
A sit down protest at the death of Ahmet Atakan was held at the Kadıköy ferry terminal in Istanbul. A larger protest is planned for 2000 this evening.
The slogans painted across the building read: ‘Murderer Tayyip’ ‘Ahmet Atakan is immortal’ ‘Murderer AKP’ ‘The murdering policemen will be held to account’
