First life lost

Postby Tim Drayton » Mon Jun 03, 2013 2:27 pm

Twenty-year-old Mehmet Ayvalıtaş has become the first person to lay down his life in these protests.

I am afraid that if this develops into a full-scale revolution, it will not be a velvet one.

For some good news, public service workers are coming out on a one-and-a-half day strike as of noon tomorrow.

There is also an occupation at Aegean University.

They could join their brothers! Check out this comment in the NYT:

Ersin Kalaycioglu, a professor of international relations at Sabanci University said: “Istanbul is seen as a place where you earn a living, where you get rich. It is a gold rush.”

Reflecting a sense of elitism that is widely shared by secular Turks in Istanbul, he complained that the city had “been invaded by Anatolian peasants” who were “uncultured.”

There is video on youtube where you see a vehicle used by the the authorities to run over protesters. It seems a little too graphic to post it here. I cant believe how much Turkey's changed. Cyprus needs to be careful from this authoritarian regime. My goodness, if they dont even care about their own people...
