The experts say that it is chemical warfare

Postby Tim Drayton » Wed Jun 19, 2013 10:07 am

The Chamber of Chemical Engineers has announced that examination of capsules used has revealed that the gases OC (oleoresin capsicum), CR (dibenzoxazepine) and CS (2-chlorobenzalmalononitrile) were used by the police to suppress the Gezi protests, and that, according to the 1993 Chemical Weapons Convention, these are classified as being chemical weapons.

The UN Commissioner for Human Rights has joined in questioning the very heavy action...

(From CNN...)

..."U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on Tuesday expressed concern about the tactics used by security forces against demonstrators.

"I am particularly concerned about allegations of excessive use of force by police against peaceful groups of protesters as this may have resulted in serious damage to health," she said in a statement issued from Geneva.

"Reports that tear gas canisters and pepper spray were fired at people from close range, or into closed spaces, and the alleged misuse of rubber bullets, need to be promptly, effectively, credibly and transparently investigated," Pillay said, noting that "the atmosphere is still clearly highly combustible..."

To put things into sharper context, the Istanbul Provincial Governor, Hüseyin Avni Mutlu, had assured protestors that there would be no violent intervention in Gezi Park itself, and the protestors themselves decided on Saturday to scale the protest down to a single watch tent under Taksim Solidarity, and requested that all other organisations present remove their own tents and banners etc., and come under the umbrella of Taksim Solidarity. Individual protestors remained welcome to come and go and camp there as they wished. They even took down the barricades around the park. There was a fair-like atmosphere in the park that day, and families came bringing their children. When, on Saturday evening the riot police suddenly launched chemical warfare on that park - and this could only happen under the order of the provisional governor - it was full of unarmed families, including women and small children.

5,000 people marched all night through the streets of Eskişehir in support of the Gezi protests. Needless to say, the police lackeys of the AKP regime used chemical weapons against them.

The Interior Ministry has announced that the 'standing still' protests are legal and that the police will not intervene.
Phew! Standing in a public space is legal in Turkey, it seems.
Unless this turns out to be another false promise, like the one that there would be no intervention in Gezi Park.

Deputy Prime-Minister Bülent Arınç has also said, of the standing still protests, "It is an extremely pleasing to the eye and peaceful form of activism. We have no reason to criticise it.”
