Trade unions with a total membership of 800,000 held a strike today to protest against the violent police intervention in Taksim at the weekend and members took part in rallies in various places. In Istanbul, the plan was to march on Taksim from two different directions, but both groups were blocked by police and eventually decided to end the action. I can't help feeling that things are beginning to fizzle out, although I hope I am wrong.

Although it seems that part of the group heading from the north did not heed the decision to end the action and valiantly resolved to march on Taksim. They are now battling it out in the street with the regime's chemical weapons.

The reaction of another German lady, the German Chancellor and CY's very good friend, Frau Merkel, to the events of the past few days...

... "Mrs Merkel said she was "appalled, like many others" at EU candidate Turkey's tough response to the protests.
"I would like to see those who have a different opinion and a different idea of society having some space in a Turkey that moves into the 21st century," she said. "What's happening in Turkey at the moment is not in line with our idea of the freedom to demonstrate or freedom of speech."
"There were horrible images in which one could see that the approach was much too harsh in my view." ...

Standing Man protest takes off. Is standing to be now made illegal in Turkey?

These apparently explode in the air then spread as powder, causing blistering and extreme reddening of the skin. The Turkish police acquired these in 2012.

If this is not chemical warfare, then what is it? How come that was the red line in Syria?

The correct name in English for this equipment appears to be a 'pepper-spray projectile launcher'.

What they were adding was oleoresin capsicum, the active ingredient in pepper sprays.
