All pretence of Turkish 'democracy' has evaporated as they arrest scores of lawyers. Video here:

It sounds like whatever rule of law was present in Turkey has completely broken down now.

You have just brightened my day, the sooner this country folds the better the world would be, including Cyprus.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the average Turk, but the Government has a lot to answer for. Maybe this will be the beginning of the balance of power change that Piratis always used to talk about.

I wonder what the Americunts are thinking now? Especially now that they have placed military hardware manufacturing in Turkey. I long for the day when Turkey uses these same weapons upon the Americunts, maybe they will just realise the error of their ways. Up the protesters!

A stab at answering the USA angle on this...

There have been a few comments of criticism from the State Dept, pretty strong criticism but we shouldn't underestimate the influence of the Turkish state lobbying in Washington, operating under the guise of Turkey/USA friendship groups.

There are very regular trips org'd for US politicians to visit Turkey and vice versa.

...and there's a bottomless fund of money to hire top-level lobbying firms and the strength of US defence firms and other US corporations, keen to do deals with Turkey.

My belief is that America has an important role lined up for Turkey in its plans for the Middle East, which could well involve the creation of a Kurdish state out of which US oil companies will pump the oil and transport it by pipeline to Turkey.

I think they will want a speedy resolution to these conflicts, and if Erdoğan does not appear capable of doing this, they will see to it from behind the scenes that he is replaced by somebody else to head the AKP who can restore calm and order.

Is Erdogan’s political honeymoon nearing its end?

Erdogan’s lust for power and position has blinded him to atrocities towards his own people and the neighboring Syrians. Despite his claims of supporting the Syrians, his real intentions in Syria are not a secret anymore.

One of the biggest allies of the Western-led, Arab-funded and Israel-directed sabotage and regime change operation in Syria is the Erdogan-led Turkish government. Since the beginning of the bloody terrorist insurgency in Syria, the Turkish authorities have done their level best to support terrorism and sabotage across the border.

Ankara has taken the lead in providing training, logistical support and a safe transit way to the terrorists fighting against Damascus. Furthermore, Ankara has hosted numerous conferences in support of the so-called Syrian opposition groups. Naturally, the Turks are opposed to their government’s role in the merciless bloodshed across the border. According to opinion polls, “some 70.8 percent of respondents think the AKP’s policy on Syria is wrong.”

Erdogan’s policy towards Syria has backfired on him in the worst possible way; today he seems to be falling in the same grave that he’s been digging for Assad. He dreams of becoming the most powerful leader in the Middle East but given the current situations in Turkey it looks like he is soon going to fall off his bed very soon…

It may be too early to predict Erdogan’s fall, but a careful observation of the recent events in the Middle East makes one wonder whether Taksim Square will turn out to be another Tahrir Square.

It's not even front page news, unlike Syria, Libya etc in the past

The police today raided the offices of a marginal left-wing party, the Socialist Democracy Party, after breaking down the front entrance with axes, and arrested 70 people. Some of the people throwing molotov cocktails at the police during this morning’s intervention in Taksim were carrying this party’s placards. According to the police they found guns and knives.

It looks like there is a new strategy of trying to drive a wedge between what is being portrayed as the ‘decent, tree-hugging protestors who care about the environment’ and so-called extreme leftists who are trying to hijack the protest for their own sinister purposes. I do not know how much success this strategy will have, given that most people believe this morning’s the molotov cocktail throwers to have been provocateurs.
