This is going to be taken down in no time. The policeman kicked the protester in the head whilst he was down - bad enough - but then he aimed at their heads and fired several shots. The poor man who was shot was only 27 years old (and his name was Etem :( ). I hope he's going to pull through, but he wasn't moving. :(

The person who fell to the ground was not the same guy that was taking a booting from the police officer at the beginning of the video. The police officer was shooting into the air.

Watch closely, someone else with a white bandana around his face strikes him (2 seconds into the vid) to the head and then runs off to the left.

This morning, a group of about 100 lawyers protested in front of the Çağlayan Judicial Complex in Istanbul against the police attack on Taksim. They were attacked by riot police and about 50 of them were arrested.

In response to the police intervention in Taksim and the arresting of lawyers at the Çağlayan Judicial Complex, 20 members of parliament from the main opposition CHP party have announced that they are coming to Istanbul to spend the night in Gezi Park.

It sounds like whatever rule of law was present in Turkey has completely broken down now.

The following photograph is doing the rounds, of one of the 'unknown' masked persons who turned up and started throwing molotov cocktails at the police this morning, and who appears to be armed, increasing suspicion that these were provocateurs.

On the protestor’s TV channel, Çapul TV, they announced that two plain clothes policeman who had infiltrated the protest had been uncovered and chucked out. One of them apparently dropped his police walkie-talkie!

It seems that some of the masked mototov cocktail throwing ‘strangers’ managed to set fire to themselves in the process, as in the picture below. Other protestors came to their aid.

You have just brightened my day, the sooner this country folds the better the world would be, including Cyprus.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against the average Turk, but the Government has a lot to answer for. Maybe this will be the beginning of the balance of power change that Piratis always used to talk about.

I wonder what the Americunts are thinking now? Especially now that they have placed military hardware manufacturing in Turkey. I long for the day when Turkey uses these same weapons upon the Americunts, maybe they will just realise the error of their ways. Up the protesters!

A stab at answering the USA angle on this...

There have been a few comments of criticism from the State Dept, pretty strong criticism but we shouldn't underestimate the influence of the Turkish state lobbying in Washington, operating under the guise of Turkey/USA friendship groups.

There are very regular trips org'd for US politicians to visit Turkey and vice versa.

...and there's a bottomless fund of money to hire top-level lobbying firms and the strength of US defence firms and other US corporations, keen to do deals with Turkey.

Provincial Governor's press statement

Postby Tim Drayton » Tue Jun 11, 2013 4:11 pm

Some excerpts from Istanbul Provincial Governor Hüseyin Avni Mutlu’s press statement concerning today’s events in Taksim:

Polis sadece AKM'deki pankartaları indirmeye yönelik bir çalışma hedeflemişti. Taksim Meydanı'na çıkıtğımız andan itibaren bu amaç alandakilerle ve kamuoyuyla detaylı bir şekilde paylaşılmıştır.

The sole goal of the police was to remove the signs from Ataturk Cultural Centre. At the time we entered Taksim Square, we shared this intention with those in the area and with the public.

[…]

It was observed that certain isolated groups wished to clash with the police as they were busy collecting material.

The necessary intervention against these was made. These groups were not permitted to create an environment of widespread clash.
[…]

It is a fact that quite a few legal or illegal entities have, as a consequence of these initiatives in Gezi Park that were started from an environmentalist perspective, turned the square and particularly our Ataturk statue and the Ataturk Cultural Centre more or less into an advertising hoarding. This sight brings great sadness to the hearts of our people and these scenes cause great detriment to the image of our country and the image of Istanbul among the people of the world. Our task of enabling us to collect these and normalise the appearance of Taksim Square has been completed. I wish as of now to state once again in confirmation that there will be no question of an intervention directed at Gezi Park

[…]
- Özellikle Gezi Parkı'ndaki kalan gençlerin bu çatışma ortamına çekilmek istenmesi yönündeki kışkırtıcı tahrik ve sözlere gençlerin itibar etmemiş olması, uyarılarımız doğrultusunda Gezi Parkı'nın dışına çıkmayarak orada beklemiş olmaları ve Taksim Meydanı'ndan polisimizle güvenlik güçlerimizle çatışmaya girmek isteyen gruplara bu manada prim vermemiş olmalarını fevkalade anlamlı ve değerli buluyoruz.

It find it to be very significant and valuable that, in particular, the young people staying in Gezi Park did not respond to inflammatory provocation and words aimed at drawing them into this environment of conflict, that they heeded our cautions and did not leave Gezi Park and waited there and thus did not give a boost to the groups that wished to clash with our police and security forces in Taksim Square
