I don't know if any move backward is involved: Turkey is still a largely conservative country, and these poll results suggest that Erdoğan may be onto a winner in electoral terms with his hard line stance on this issue.

I gave them the benefit of the doubt. I truly believed, briefly, they were making progress. Conservative, nowadays, is tantamount to going backward. If you say they are now 'conservative', to me they are the equivalent of a backward nation.

- So, Erdogan's popularity stems from 'conservatism' of 'old values' which, practiced in Turkey, are equivalent to what we in the west would judge as barbaric. Women enslaved. Children abused. Reform restrained!

The Turkish Broadcaster TRT has sacked two of its employees.

Their crime was to use Twitter during the Gezi Park protests.

From Hurriyet...

" ... Turkey’s public broadcaster TRT has dismissed two of its employees and fined another for social media messages they sent during the height of the Gezi protests between May and June, daily Radikal reported today. ..."

Hurriyet reports on another police attack using gas and TOMAs at the ODTU against a peaceful protest by the students there protesting against the building of the wall on the Syria-Turkey border.

"... Ankara’s Middle Eastern Technical University (ODTÜ) has been the center of fresh tension late on Nov. 17, as the police responded with tear gas and water cannons against protesters who gathered this time to denounce the construction of a wall at the Turkish-Syrian border.

Police crackdowns have become constant since the Metropolitan Municipality moved ahead with a road project passing through the university’s leafy campus and expected to cause the destruction of over 3,000 trees. ... "

Bill, I'm sick of hearing about all this, I hope this God forsaken country implodes so the rest of the world will rest.

News is news file... it has to be covered.

Tear Gas and TOMAs return to the streets of Ankara as police break up a demo by teachers on Teacher's Day protesting Erdogan's move to ban parental choice in education.

...sadly, shooting at students isn't enough, (tree huggers and all), gassing parents is next, over the Family unit, because this government assumes the role of a deep state, but openly. indeed, like Ataturk (and Stalin), Erdogan believes power (in a Democracy) is found in the votes he can get from the vast numbers of Peasants who effectively are isolated from his brutality struggling to survive, while relatively peaceful populations are incensed by this Ignorance; one year left to elections.

More today from Hurriyet on the police crack-down on the Teacher's Day demo in Ankara, including news of a very serious head injury caused to a protester.

"... Hundreds of teachers faced a police crackdown on Nov. 23 as they joined in a march in Ankara to protest the government’s policies on education on the occasion of Teachers’ Day. Seven protesters were injured during the crackdown, while one female teacher sustained cerebral trauma due to the impact of a gas canister fired by the police.

The teacher, Aslı Akdemir, has been transferred to the hospital. Doctors said although severe, her injury wasn’t life-threatening. ..."
