Driving and Cars in Cyprus

Postby Jonas » Fri May 31, 2013 12:59 pm

Hello everyone, first post so please be gentle.

I am currently UK based but will be working in Cyprus from July until the end of the year.

I was wondering what the road network is like? Is it reasonably well maintained, or is it an exercise in pothole avoidance?

The reason I ask is that I have a fairly new Vauxhall Insignia. I am considering shipping it to Cyprus, rather than buying a car there.

Is my car likely to stand up to the local conditions, or do you think it will get trashed on poorly maintained roads and clogged up with sand?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Can anyone kindly give me a heads-up as to what the road network is like?

As a visitor to CY, can tell you...

The main cities are linked by an excellent Highway system, to sort of GB dual-carriageway standard.

You'll have no probs on the rest of the road system which is well tarmacked.

There's a lot of dust around in the Summer so cars need frequent cleaning.

Probs may arise with unmade roads, dirt-tracks... but you'll prob have no need to use them.

As to importing a car, be very aware of a massive excise charge and the very high cost of registering a motor in CY.

Connecting freeways are great but plenty of bumps etc in towns due to a recent installation of a nationwide sewerage system and plenty of purpose built humps to slow speed down.

They’re on the last stage where they have to add a nice layer to all the roads but haven’t done so yet.

The road network is good, but maybe you should also consider renting a car for 6 months (or so) to avoid the trouble of shipping over your car and then re-shipping back to the UK.

The local OPEL (Vauxhall equivalent) service centre is not very reliable. Welcome to CF and good luck!

Most roads are reasonable: The main highways connecting the main cities are mostly two-lane. The (now) B roads they replaced are mostly good quality single carriageway. Secondary roads with E numbers tend to be a bit windy and the F roads can be that plus single lane, but some rural roads are unsurfaced, with a loose stone chipping top, or packed earth in the forests. Your Insignia should have no problems in Cyprus, even on such rural roads in dry conditions. (I drive a Honda with very little ground clearance and have it taken up (and down) some of these rural roads ).

Cars here tend to last well: little to no rusting. (My other car is a 19 yo Nissan with 167K on the clock ( about 100,000 miles) - runs very well.

the standards of driving? ....

we do not so much have traffic laws as guidelines.....

A red traffic light is a suggestion that you might want to stop , or at least proceed with caution,

A green traffic light is a warning to go with caution as those with a red light will still be crossing in front of you...

Use of indicators is rare.....

Parking is a national joke...
