WHAT IS THE BEST METHOD FOR INTERNET IN CY

Postby miltiades » Thu May 30, 2013 8:27 am

Although I visit Cyprus regularly, there are some matters that I don't take any notice of, such as the one I'm asking some advice.
As I'm planning to spend most of my time in Cyprus, internet at home is a matter of prime importance. I have a fixed line at my apartment, what is or who is the most reliable and cost effective service provider in Cyprus.
I have Cyprus internet on my iphone which I use in Cyprus through CYTA.
I also have a UK Samsung Galaxy S4 that I will unlock here in the UK and use in Cyprus, also I would want internet on my Galaxy.
Any advice would be appreciated. I know that GR is a bit of an expert on these matters, were I to entice him with the ...pleasure of meeting me, perhaps he would kindly, and seriously, offer some advice.
I plan to have my office in my apartment so as to keep an eye on my UK business so a professional set up is a must.
I use Viper for my calls to the UK, although reception is by far not perfect.
In the UK I have unlimited free calls to Cyprus and the rest of the EU, is there such a packet in Cyprus ?

Is cablenet a monthly contract or a pay as you go.
I have two contracts in the UK, both with 3, the cost with unlimited calls, texts and internet is about £40 per month per phone, how does this compare with rates in Cyprus. I have been told that Cyprus is the most expensive country in Europe for mobile contracts, is this correct in your opinion ?

Cablenet is the fastest and cheapest for home internet, I am not sure about phones, but suspect that MTN is probably cheaper than CyTA.

We use 'PrimeTel' Internet, Telephone and Wife's mobile, think its 33 euros per month, although its in her name, financial reasons :D
Never had a problem with it, like we did with CYTA, they are forever making you log in and out...

Just a thought have looked at tethering your phone to your lap-top? Not sure if it works in Cyprus but I use this technique in the U.K. and saves on fixed line set up.

yes but the data transmission costs are likely to be high while speed will not be brilliant...

Having taken advice from many, including CYF members, I went to CYTA on a Friday afternoon. I was served by a very efficient and pleasant lady.
Initially I was asked to produce a utility bill but on explaining that I don't have any, I produced my birth certificate and my CY ID
and requested that the telephone is re connected and internet is provided via a router.

She gave me a choice of 3 telephone numbers and I chose the easiest one to remember.
She told me that it would take 3-5 working days to connect, on requesting an earlier connection she promised to do her best .

No money was paid either as a deposit or for reconnection, this would appear on my first bill.

I was impressed by the service given to me by Chriso, thanked her and briefly told her about my ....arrival at Victoria station!!!

Left the office and an hour later a call came through from a CYTA engineer informing me that reconnection will be carried out on Monday morning !! I was impressed.

Monday morning, as promised, my phone was on, my router installed and my Smart TV connected to Internet.

I have not had much dealings with Cypriot businesses over the years but I must admit I found CYTA to my utter satisfaction.

The conclusion I have drawn is that a smile and politeness in any given situation goes a terribly long way.
