Rather than start a new thread on Cyprus I thought the existing one would be appropriate.
What a wonderful island, what beautiful weather, how lucky are those that wake up every morning gazing at a clear blue sky, feeling the warmth of glorious sunshine, entering a shop and being made welcome with a smile.
I talk a lot and always have a chat with whoever is around be it a shop assistant, a road sweeper or a ....policeman!!
I talked to a lot of policemen the night before the Limassol derby, fascinated by the ferocity of support the two teams have from their supporters. Listening to the noise you would never have imagined that Cyprus had suffered a major financial disaster, the fans are nutters to say the least, they control certain roads such as Kennedy Avenue where AEL has its "headquarters", A stones throw from my apartment, the incessant sound of horns, fireworks, shouts lasting until the early hours of the morning.I must admit it must be hell for local residents that have to wake up in the morning, go to work, take their kids to school.
Road blocks were set up in adjacent roads to my apartment, police everywhere, cigarette in their mouth and a walkie talkie in their hands.Spoke to a number of officers and asked what the fuss was all about. "Mappa" they all said, and here was I thinking that some serious political development had taken place, perhaps the Turkish occupying army had departed!!!
It reminded me of scenes when Makarios returned from his imposed exile from Seychelles when the entire island erupted !!
People react and interact according to how you speak to them, how you express a view and how you hold your self. I love the Cypriot people, the Cypriot dialect which I have mastered and I adore, switching from Greek katharevousa to local dialect and never intermix Greek and English as my older brother, still in Cyprus, does and annoys me. He is battling his bank, unable to comprehend that the bird has flown...
I'm returning towards the end of June for a longer stay and I cant wait to get back.
Cyprus, the greatest nation on earth, USA the ...second!!

The owner was happy to see me and immediately offered me a drink, I couldn't ask for a bottle of wine so I said thanks, I will have a scotch, now and again a stiff scotch goes down well, and boy did I need it.
Where is Maria I asked. Didn't she tell you he replied? What I said.
She went back to Greece yesterday !!!!
Oh he said, her last day here was Sunday, apparently she couldn't make a go of it in Cyprus and returned to Greece!!!
Im surprised he said that she did not tell you, she was so overtly happy to see you ! I did not have the heart to tell him.
Well Maria, wherever you are good luck to you and I hope your children derive some benefit from the money you conned out of me....
To my late friend George, may you rest in peace . I hope that our short friendship at least gave your children a little comfort.
The moral of the story is that anyone can be conned regardless of age and experience given the right circumstances.
I tried calling Maria on her Cyprus and Greek number but ....

maybe all along you may have even known you were being duped, Miltiades, but went ahead with it anyway....knowing the lady was desperate

"maybe all along you may have even known you were being duped, Miltiades, but went ahead with it anyway....knowing the lady was desperate"

The circumstances of my acquaintance with the lady were such that no suspicions whatsoever entered my mind.Meeting her in such a way, realizing that the lady was Maria, her emotions at discovering my identity, her immense pleasure and attention to every word I spoke, meeting her children and being the recipient of so many accolades, completely overawed me, in fact I did consider when giving her the money to call it a gift but I thought I would wait until she repaid and then offer a contribution to help with the kids needs. I don't have any bitterness towards her and I feel the lady did what she did for her children on their return to Greece, she obviously had her flight tickets bought already but perhaps very little money to take back home She must have agonized over her actions and I'm certain that right now she feels as guilty as hell, in time I know that she will make contact and express her remorse.
Having suffered the "haircut" in Cyprus I will write this off as part of the ...haircut by a gorgeous ...blond !!!!
Did I fancy her, strangely I never saw her as anything else apart from the wife of my late friend and a devoted mother, a ponemeni mitera .
George also shared my love of Greek music, often we would listen to Stratos Dyonisiou, my favourite songs were also his, songs that will never die such as O Salonikios, O taxitzis, O Paliatzis !!!and I Magges then iparxoun pia !!!

( have deleted her real name )

I had this email this morning from Maria, I forgot that I also gave her my business card.
I expected her to contact me and she did.
I replied, in English with a very short message.

" I wish you and your children all the luck in the world with health and happiness. I bear no animosity towards you, although I was deeply hurt, I understand your predicament. Use the money for the benefit of the children , a gift from a friend of their beloved father."
