Neither of us really knew of President Kennedy, at 17 your minds are focused elsewhere and right then my mind was focused on the gorgeous blond.
We met the following day, Saturday, I took her to the London...Zoo, very romantic watching monkeys picking fleas of each other, spend much of Saturday together and arranged to meet the following day and go to the cinema.
Ben Hur with Charlton Heston was on, I had seen the film 3 times already with other short lived dates!
Late afternoon she invited me to meet mum and dad, but for some unbeknown to me peculiar reason, she asked that I say I'm French.I don't speak French I told her. Neither do my parents she responded but you look French .
Arrived at the house and gingerly entered the front door, her mum shook my hand and said "komatalevou" !!!
And here was I thinking she couldn't speak French!! A very pleasant first impression I must say.
We entered the living room and there seated was her father. He stood up, shook my hand and immediately asked " Where do you come from" He was a well built man, stern looking, don't mess with me sort of looks and posture.
I hesitated for a brief moment and I replied "I come from Cyprus" His ears begun to twitch as he pulled himself even higher and in a commanding voice asked, are you a Greek or a Turk. I'm a Greek Cypriot Sir, I relied, ignoring the request made by his daughter that I should say French. His eyebrows seemed to be getting larger as he pointed to his daughter and said in a no nonsense way, take this bloody terrorist out of my house NOW, he barked.
I was sure he did not like me or approve of his daughters choice, I made my way to the door, his daughter right behind me and in a stern voice said to him, dad he goes, I go.
Only knew her for 3 days but we seemed to have hit it off well and liked each other a great deal. She followed me out into the street , her old man calling her back, she arguing and telling him that he was very rude.
I paused for a few minutes, got my breath back and said to the lady, its best that you go back, lets meet in the week. Of course we did not have mobile phones in those days so she gave me her home number and I promised to call her the following day.
I did not call until much later, 3 maybe four days, I was still recovering from the thunderous welcome her father gave me, and besides what if he answered the phone.Maybe I should have listened to her and deny my Cyprus by pretending to be French. I did not, Cypriot I was then and Cypriot I'm now.
Subject to interest I will continue later...
