About time they clamped down on alcohol, singing and free speech. Those bastards need to pray more:

Boycott starts after Turkish writer defends national alcoholic drink 'rakı'

Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç asked a local singer not to sing the folk song “Vardar Ovası” because the song contained the word “rakı” in the lyrics created new debate.

Turkish popular crime ficton writer Ahmet Ümit tweeted about rakı and saying, "If you remove rakı from life, neither the joy of conversation, nor friendship, nor the evening, nor a full moon, nor love... #direnrakı (#resistrakı)."

Ahmet Ümit began receiving critism after the tweet, with some starting the campaign, "we are not buying Ahmet Ümit's books"

But if people act like assholes, damage my property, keep me awake at night and cost me extra in tax then I'm afraid it's best to curtail their nocturnal activities for the general good. Why on earth people need to stay up until gone 2am in the morning falling around in the street is beyond me. (Ayia Napa excepted of course)

we had this debate elsewhere. All that will happen is that people will drink the same amount but finish earlier, or the carry out trade will grow. Look at what used to be the 6 o'clock swill down in Australia. In the north east of England the bother was at about 1100, because of 1030 time gentleman please.

I just wonder ,,how will it affect the tourist trade?

I cannot see tourists bing impressed with bars shutting at 22.00. Even those who are not party animals or drunk Brit youths.

I'm not likely to be a tourist in Turkey, nor do I drink much. However, I'd be a bit pissed off if I was on holiday and I couldn't go to have a relaxing glass of Chateaux de plonk after 10pm in a bar of my choosing.

What would you do? Go and play scrabble in your hotel room, followed by charades and a sing song of Kum by Yah me Lord(o)?

Indeed. If the bars are closed one might as well go and stand in the park, taking the night air....or is standing still still a dangerous activity?.
