Potential for Dutch Disease in Cyprus

Postby SKI-preo » Fri May 24, 2013 3:58 am

It will be in the interest of many industries other than Oil and Gas if Cyprus can hang on and stay in the Euro and for the Euro to continue to remain reasonably weak.

An increase in revenues from natural resources like gas will make a new Cypriot Pound stronger compared to that of other nations , resulting in the Cyprus' other exports becoming more expensive for other countries to buy, making the tourism & manufacturing sectors much less competitive.

A weak euro will benefit Cyprus the way that the artificially weak Euro is now benefiting the Germans and some others in terms of competitiveness.

That's what Europe has been thinking for itself not only for the euro but later on to fuel it's economy with cheap energy from Cyprus...just like the Americans have been doing for the past 5 years...and consequently the US dollar has remained relatively stable even though they've borrowing close to 90 billion a month for the past 5 years...Europe might eventually go the same route....
